Devotional: The Things You Have Not Yet Seen
There is a kind of darkness that does not come from the absence of light but from eyes that have not yet opened. You may have carried your Bible for years and still walked through seasons of confusion, loss, or fear, not because God withheld His counsel, but because the wondrous things were there, waiting to be unveiled.
David knew that feeling. He was a man steeped in the Word, yet he prayed in Psalm 119:18, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” That is not a prayer of ignorance; it is a prayer of hunger. David understood that Scripture holds depths no single reading exhausts, and that God Himself must open the eye of the heart before the treasure is found.
Tonight, something in your life may still feel darkened, a relationship, a decision, a fear that circles back every evening. The invitation is simply this: let the same God who inspired the Word illuminate it for you, personally, tonight.
Bring this prayer to Him slowly. He is not in a hurry, and neither do you need to be.
Night Prayer for September 14
Evening Spiritual Posture
Before you pray, still yourself. Lay down the noise of the day. Confess anything that needs clearing, receive His forgiveness freely given through Christ, and come grateful, because a thankful heart is a ready heart.
Main Scripture
“Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” (Psalm 119:18, NKJV)
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I come to You at the close of this day with a grateful heart. You are the Father of lights, and every good and perfect gift comes down from You (James 1:17, NKJV). I worship You as the one whose Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105, NKJV).
I do not come to You as one outside Your family. I come as one seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6, NKJV), standing in His name, welcomed into Your presence through His finished work.
Prayer for the Night
Lord, as this day closes, I pray the prayer of Your servant David: open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law (Psalm 119:18, NKJV). Where I have read and not yet received, illuminate. Where I have heard and not yet understood, make plain.
You promised through the Spirit of truth to guide me into all truth (John 16:13, NKJV). I receive that promise tonight. Let no area of my life remain darkened by ignorance of Your counsel. Let Your Word be the light that drives out every shadow.
I thank You that You have given me the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16, NKJV), and that the anointing I have received from You teaches me all things (1 John 2:27, NKJV). In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift those who are walking in confusion tonight, those who know You but cannot yet see clearly in a situation they are carrying. Open their eyes as well, for You show no partiality and Your counsel belongs to all who ask (James 1:5, NKJV).
I pray for those who do not yet know Your Word. Draw them to it, and let it come alive to them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Petition
Father, You know the specific area where I have needed clarity and have not yet found it. I come to You with that tonight, not with striving, but with trust.
It is written: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5, NKJV). I ask, Lord. I ask without doubting, because You are faithful to Your Word. I agree with what You have written, and I receive wisdom tonight as a gift from Your hand.
Where fear has whispered that I am too far behind, or that the answers are beyond me, I answer with what is written: You reveal deep and hidden things; You know what lies in the darkness, and light dwells with You (Daniel 2:22, NKJV). That light belongs to me in Christ.
I pray from my standing in Christ, not from beneath my confusion. Because I am in Him, I have access to the full counsel of God. Unveil it to me, Lord, line by line, night by night, as I remain in Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
David did not pray Psalm 119:18 as a formality. He prayed it because he believed the Word held more than he had yet discovered, and that God alone held the key. The same is true for you tonight. Every unanswered question in your life has a corresponding truth in Scripture; your role is to keep asking God to open your eyes to it. As Andrew Murray wrote, “God is ready to work in us more than we know or think. Our highest wisdom is to yield ourselves to Him and trust Him fully.”
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to pray for unveiled eyes when reading Scripture?
It means acknowledging that understanding the Bible is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is a spiritual one. Paul prayed that believers would receive “the spirit of wisdom and revelation” in the knowledge of God (Ephesians 1:17, NKJV). When you pray Psalm 119:18, you are inviting the Holy Spirit, who inspired the Word, to also interpret it personally and specifically for your life.
How do I know if ignorance of God’s Word is affecting an area of my life?
A reliable sign is repeated struggle in an area despite sincere effort, often because the lie shaping the struggle has never been met with the specific truth that answers it. Hosea 4:6 warns that God’s people can be destroyed for lack of knowledge. The remedy is not more information but illumination, which comes through honest prayer and attentive time in the Word, asking God to show you what you have not yet seen.
Final Encouragement
You did not end this day alone. You brought it to the One who holds every answer you have been searching for, and His Word is alive and working in you even as you sleep (Psalm 127:2, NKJV).
