Devotional: The Person You Are Becoming
You have been walking away from something old, and the lightness surprises you sometimes. Other times, it feels disorienting. Who are you without the weight you carried for so long? Who are you when the labels others gave you no longer fit? Who are you when God calls you capable, whole, chosen, when you still feel the pull of who you used to be?
Tonight, you may be standing at the threshold of something new. A responsibility you never imagined. A calling that feels too large. A version of yourself that looks nothing like the person who went to bed last year, last month, even last week. And the question pressing against your chest is not whether God can use you. It is whether you can believe what He says about you now.
The old ways of seeing yourself want to creep back in. The shame you thought you buried. The smallness you learned to accept. The voice that says you are not qualified, not ready, not new enough yet. But God does not measure your readiness by your past. He measures it by His finished work.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (CSB) says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!”
This is not poetry. This is declaration. This is not a suggestion for who you might become someday. This is the truth of who you are right now. The old has passed away. Not passing. Not slowly fading. Passed. Gone. Finished. And the new has come. Not coming. Not waiting for you to feel different. Already here. Already true. Already yours.
Paul wrote this letter to a church in Corinth that was still messy, still figuring things out, still carrying the smell of their old lives. Yet he did not tell them to wait until they felt new. He told them they were new. The transformation was not contingent on their performance. It was anchored in Christ.
Consider the Apostle Peter. The man who denied Jesus three times stood on the shore after the resurrection, dripping with shame and regret. Jesus did not remind him of his failure. He asked him three times, “Do you love Me?” And after each answer, Jesus gave him an assignment. “Feed My lambs. Tend My sheep. Feed My sheep.” Jesus was not waiting for Peter to feel worthy. He was calling Peter into the identity he already possessed: forgiven, restored, commissioned.
Peter did not step into greater capacity because he stopped remembering his past. He stepped into it because he believed what Jesus said about his future. And on the day of Pentecost, the same man who once cowered before a servant girl stood before thousands and preached the gospel with fire. That was not a different Peter. That was the new Peter, fully embracing the identity Christ had already given him.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (CSB) says, “Take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.”
This is an act of the will. A choice to stop wearing what no longer fits. A decision to put on what God has already tailored for you. The new self is not something you earn. It is something you receive, something you step into, something you wear with confidence because it was made according to God’s likeness, not your limitations.
Romans 8:29 (CSB) reminds us, “For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” God is not surprised by your growth. He planned it. He is not scrambling to figure out how to use the new you. He designed the new you.
Maybe tonight you are staring at an opportunity that terrifies you because it requires you to show up as someone you are still learning to be. Maybe you are holding back from a conversation, a decision, a step forward because you are afraid people will see the old you instead of the new. Maybe you are exhausted from trying to prove you have changed, and you just want to rest in the truth that God already sees you as whole.
You do not have to convince heaven of your transformation. You do not have to audition for your own identity. You do not have to wait until you feel like the person God says you are. You simply have to believe it. You simply have to walk in it. You simply have to let go of the old labels and embrace the new name.
Tonight, God is not asking you to become new. He is asking you to fully embrace the new creation you already are. He is inviting you to step into greater capacity not because you have arrived, but because He has already qualified you. He is calling you to walk in the fullness of your identity in Him, not tomorrow, not when you feel ready, but now.
Close your eyes. Take a slow breath. Let the truth settle deeper than your doubts. You are not who you were. You are who He says you are. And that is more than enough.
A Gentle Pause Before Prayer

Before you pray, take a moment to release the tension in your shoulders. Let your hands rest open in your lap. You are not fighting for your identity tonight. You are receiving it.
God is not waiting for you to prove yourself. He is waiting for you to rest in what He has already declared. You are new. You are His. You are called. You are capable in Him.
Let’s pray.
Thanksgiving Before Rest
Father, Your Word says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (CSB), “Give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Tonight I thank You for the work You have already finished in me. I thank You that I am not defined by my past, but by Your grace. I thank You for every moment today that reminded me I am Yours. I thank You for the new identity You have given me in Christ. I release this day into Your hands, trusting that You are making all things new.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Confession and Release
Lord, I bring this day to You. I confess the moments I believed the old labels more than Your truth. I confess the times I shrank back because I did not trust who You say I am. I confess the fear that kept me from stepping into greater capacity. Your Word says in 1 John 1:9 (CSB), “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I receive Your forgiveness now. I release every lie I believed about myself today. I am forgiven. I am cleansed. I am new.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Night Prayer for May 26
Lord, as I come to You with this night prayer for may 26, I ask that You help me fully embrace my identity in You. I do not want to live another day wearing labels that no longer fit. I do not want to shrink back from what You have called me to because I am still listening to voices from my past. Tonight, I choose to believe what You say about me.
You say I am a new creation. You say the old has passed away. You say I am created in righteousness and true holiness. I receive that truth now. I step into it. I let it cover me like a new garment, tailored by Your hand, designed for the life You have called me to live.
I ask that You silence every voice that tells me I am not ready, not qualified, not new enough yet. Let me hear only Your voice. Let me see myself the way You see me. Let me walk with the confidence that comes not from my own strength, but from the finished work of Christ.
Your Word says in Colossians 3:3 (CSB), “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” My life is not defined by my mistakes. It is hidden with Christ. My identity is not fragile. It is secure in You. I am not trying to become someone new. I am learning to live as the new person I already am.
Lord, as I step into greater capacity, I ask that You remind me daily who I am in You. When fear whispers that I am not enough, remind me that I am complete in Christ. When shame tries to pull me back, remind me that I am forgiven and free. When doubt questions whether I can do this, remind me that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I surrender every hesitation, every insecurity, every moment of self-doubt. I ask that You replace them with faith, boldness, and the unshakable truth of who I am in You. Let me walk into tomorrow not as who I was, but as who You have made me to be.
Thank You, Lord, for making me new. Thank You for calling me into greater things. Thank You for never giving up on the work You started in me. I rest tonight knowing that my identity is secure, my calling is sure, and my future is bright in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

FAQ
How do I embrace my new identity in Christ when I still feel like the old me?
God's declaration of who you are now is not based on your feelings but on Christ's finished work. Second Corinthians 5:17 tells us the old has passed away and the new has come—not passing, but already passed. You embrace your new identity by choosing to believe what God says about you is true right now, regardless of lingering shame or doubt from your past.
What does it mean to put on the new self according to Ephesians 4?
Putting on the new self is an act of your will—a conscious choice to stop wearing old patterns of thinking and behaving that no longer fit who God has made you to be. It's not about earning a new identity but receiving and stepping into the one God has already created for you according to His likeness and purpose.
Why did Peter deny Jesus but still became a great leader?
Peter stepped into greater capacity not by forgetting his failure, but by believing what Jesus said about his future and identity. After the resurrection, Jesus didn't remind Peter of his denial; instead, He gave him three assignments to feed His sheep, showing Peter was already forgiven, restored, and commissioned for ministry.
How can I believe God's plan for my new calling when I feel unqualified?
God measures your readiness not by your past or current feelings but by His finished work in Christ. He foreknew and predestined your growth, so He is not scrambling to use you—He designed you for this season. The calling itself is evidence you are ready, because God does not assign work to those He has not equipped.
