Today’s Open Heaven devotional is a timely word for every believer who feels the pull of the world whispering that life looks brighter on the other side of God’s covering. Pastor Adeboye draws from the cautionary tale of Gehazi to remind us that what we stand to lose far outweighs anything the enemy dangles before us. Whether you are rock-solid in your walk or quietly wrestling with the urge to drift, this message is for you, a gentle but firm call back to the shadow of the Almighty.

Bible reading: 2 Kings 5:20-27 (KJV)
Memory verse: For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: – 2 Corinthians 2:15 (KJV)
Years ago, when I was a younger Christian, many people would come to me and say, “Young man, we see the way you are on fire for the Lord. Make sure you don’t backslide.” Whenever I heard that, I would smile because I had made up my mind that I would not be a fool and return to the fear, sickness, and bondage Jesus took away from my life when I became born again. I thank God for His grace, which has kept me all these years. Remembering where God brought me from has been one of the ways I have stayed on course. When you constantly remember what Jesus saved you from, no one will need to preach to you to remain in Christ. I pray that you will not yield to satan’s temptations to depart from the cover of the shadow of God’s wings, in Jesus’ name.
Anyone who departs from the cover that the shadow of God’s wings provides is open to all kinds of sicknesses and diseases. Today’s Bible reading tells us the story of Gehazi, who decided to leave the shelter of God’s wings. Within a day, the fellow who could have ended up as the next prophet, because he was Elisha’s servant, ended up becoming a leper. Sometimes, it only takes a brief moment for people who decide to leave God’s covering to forfeit all the blessings they have enjoyed under His cover. I pray that your story will not move from glory to shame, in Jesus’ name.
People who wander from the shadow of God’s wings expose themselves to death. Proverbs 21:16 says, “The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.” When people are in the congregation of the dead, their lives stink. People who decide to backslide have accepted an open invitation to a stinking life. They have decided to invite rottenness and disfavour into their lives. No matter how beautiful a house may be, guests will avoid it once a rat has died inside and begun to decay. They might not want to wine or dine with the owner of the house until the pungent smell has been taken care of. In 2 Corinthians 2:14-15, however, Apostle Paul describes the believer as a sweet savour of Christ.
Beloved, when you abide under the shadow of the Almighty, you will continue to increase in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man (Luke 2:52).

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today
These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.
Prayer Points
- Lord, deepen my gratitude for every chain You broke at my salvation, so that the memory of where You brought me from becomes an anchor that holds me steady.
- Father, sharpen my discernment so I can recognise the enemy's subtle invitations to step outside Your covering before I take a single step toward them.
- Holy Spirit, let the fragrance of Christ be unmistakably evident in my character, my decisions, and my relationships today and always.
- God, wherever pride or greed has cracked the door that Gehazi opened, seal it shut in my life by the power of Your Spirit.
- Lord, preserve my destiny. Let no single moment of compromise be enough to forfeit the inheritance You have been preparing for me.
- Father, I pray for every believer standing at the crossroads of faithfulness and compromise, draw them back under Your wings before they take the wrong path.
- Lord, let my life release the sweet aroma of Christ in every room I enter, every conversation I have, and every space I occupy.
- God, grant me the grace to grow daily in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with You and with people, as I remain rooted in Your presence.
Declarations
- I am hidden under the shadow of the Almighty, and I choose to remain there, no temptation is worth the covering I would surrender.
- My life carries the fragrance of Christ; wherever I go, I bring the sweet savour of His grace and not the decay of a wandering soul.
- I will not trade my God-given destiny for a momentary gain; my eyes are fixed on the Author and Finisher of my faith.
- The blood of Jesus is my covering, and under that covering I am increasing in favour with God and with people every single day.
- I am not a candidate for shame; I am walking from glory to glory because I dwell in the house of the Lord.
Reflection
Take a quiet moment today to list, even mentally, three specific things Jesus rescued you from before you came to faith. Let those three things do the preaching. The truth is, no sermon, no accountability partner, and no warning sign is as powerful as a vivid, personal memory of life without God’s covering. Carry that list like a compass, and every time the enemy suggests that stepping outside God’s shadow is harmless or temporary, let the memory correct the lie before it becomes a foothold.
