Today’s Open Heaven devotional invites us into one of the most urgent conversations a believer can have, the question of whether we are truly sheltered or slowly stepping out into the open. Pastor E.A. Adeboye draws from Psalm 91 and the sobering stories of Adam, Eve, and Samson to remind us that God’s covering is not automatic; it is sustained by our posture of surrender and holiness. This message is for every sincere believer who wants to walk through life protected, purposeful, and unashamed. If you have ever felt spiritually exposed or distant from God, today’s word is tailor-made for you.

Bible reading: Psalm 91:1-16 (KJV)
Memory verse: And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. – Genesis 3:7 (KJV)
Today’s Bible reading is a chapter that can be referred to as a ‘divine insurance policy’. It shows that if a person is under the protection of the Almighty God, then he or she is truly covered. When you consider all the beautiful things that a believer gets by staying under the shadow of God’s wings, it becomes clear that it is foolishness not to surrender all to God. When the wings of the Almighty God cover a Christian, he or she will enjoy physical, spiritual, and material blessings. Furthermore, his or her past, present, and future will be covered by God. A Christian who backslides, however, has departed from the shadow of the Almighty and has more or less decided that he or she does not want to enjoy the benefits drawn from being under God’s covering.
The moment people come out from under a covering, they become exposed. Likewise, the moment a believer departs from the covering of the Almighty, he or she has chosen to be naked. Genesis 3:1-24 tells us the story of Adam and Eve, who left the covering of the Almighty because they sinned. The first thing that happened to them was that they discovered they were naked. They lost the glory that had previously covered them and became ashamed. Secondly, they could no longer fellowship with God as they used to.
Beloved, if you are living under the covering of the Almighty God, your future is secure because Christ in you is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). The opposite of glory is shame; hence, people who backslide or people who refuse to surrender to God are bound to experience shame. They become devoid of power and strength, and their secret becomes easily accessible to the enemy. For example, the enemies had been watching Samson, and they knew that he was not an ordinary man. They knew that he possessed superhuman strength and wanted to discover the secret behind it. They also knew that he had a weakness for women, so they connived with Delilah to find out the secret of his strength so they could remove it, turn him into an ordinary man, and capture him. Eventually, they succeeded because Samson had left the covering of the Lord due to his immoral lifestyle (Judges 16:4-21).
Child of God, learn from Samson’s mistakes; seek to be under the covering of the Almighty God at all times by leading a holy life.

Prayer Points
- Lord, draw me deeper into Your presence today and let me never be comfortable living on the edges of Your covering, keep me anchored at the centre of Your will.
- Father, reveal every subtle compromise in my life that is quietly pulling me out from under Your shadow, and give me the grace to deal with it decisively.
- Holy Spirit, be my constant reminder that the blessings of Psalm 91 are not for spectators but for those who abide, help me to truly abide and not merely attend.
- God, wherever shame has already touched my life because of past exposure to the enemy, restore my glory and clothe me afresh with Your righteousness.
- Lord, expose and dismantle every conspiracy the enemy has formed against me in seasons when I was unguarded, and seal those vulnerabilities by Your blood.
- Father, let the hope of glory that lives in me through Christ Jesus be more real to me today than any fear, temptation, or discouragement I am facing.
- God, I pray for every believer in my family and community who has backslidden, pursue them with Your love, break through their walls, and bring them home to Your covering.
- Lord, cultivate in me a lifestyle of holiness that is not driven by fear of consequences but by a genuine love for You and a deep appreciation of what Your covering means.
Declarations
- I dwell in the secret place of the Most High, and I choose every single day to remain there, the shadow of the Almighty is my home and I refuse to wander from it.
- Christ in me is the hope of glory, and because He lives in me I walk in honour, not in shame, the enemy has no access to my secrets.
- I am not an easy target; I am covered by the blood of Jesus, shielded by His angels, and hidden in His purposes, no trap set against me shall prosper.
- I surrender every weakness, every appetite, and every blind spot to God right now, He is my strength where I am frail and my wisdom where I am blind.
- The covering of God over my life is complete, my past is redeemed, my present is guarded, and my future is secure in the hands of the One who never sleeps.
Reflection
Take a quiet moment today to honestly assess where you are standing spiritually, not where you were at your best, but where you are right now. Samson’s tragedy did not begin the night Delilah cut his hair; it began in the small, repeated choices to treat God’s gift as a personal possession rather than a sacred trust. Ask yourself what habits, relationships, or hidden compromises may be nudging you toward the edges of God’s covering, and make one concrete decision today to move back toward the centre.
