Adeboye draws from Scripture and lived experience to show that pride is not merely a personality flaw, it is a spiritual trapdoor. Bible reading: Ezekiel 28:12-19 (KJV)
Memory verse: For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. – Luke 14:11 (KJV)
I had a friend who was a brilliant judge. Though we were close, he had one weakness – pride. Many years ago, I was travelling to Abuja, and I saw him coming out of the plane I was going to board with two people standing to his left and right. I approached him to greet him warmly, but he just looked at me and said, “Who is this?” I replied, “Hello, it’s me, Adeboye, your friend.” Then, one of the people standing by him whispered to me, “He has lost his memory.” I was told that he couldn’t remember who he was or even recognise any of his children. Everything was gone just like that.
Anyone who allows pride into his or her heart will suffer the same fate as the devil. Today’s Bible reading tells us that he was full of wisdom, perfect in beauty, and in his ways until iniquity was found in him. That iniquity was revealed in verse 17: his heart was lifted up because of his beauty, and he corrupted his wisdom because of his brightness. Pride was found in him, and, as expected, it led to his downfall.
God desires to share His wisdom and brilliance with men, but many times, people don’t last in the lofty positions He places them in because of pride. Isaiah 14:12-19 tells us how Lucifer became proud: he wanted to exalt himself above God. In those few verses, the word ‘I’ is repeated many times. This is one way to tell if you are becoming proud or not. When life becomes all about you, your achievements, the things you can do, how you are better than others, and why you must be honoured and exalted, then pride has already crept into your heart. If that is the case, you must repent immediately because pride has only one agenda in people’s lives: to bring them down (Proverbs 16:18).
Beloved, you must recognise that there is a God who can lift you up and also bring you down. You must also recognise that it is not by strength that any man prevails. Lamentations 3:22 says that it is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed. It is because of His mercy that you and I are still here. If you are humble, God will give you grace. If you are proud, He will resist you (James 4:6). The choice is yours. Choose wisely!

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.
Prayer Points
- Lord, search every corner of my heart and uproot any seed of pride before it takes hold and bears bitter fruit in my life.
- Father, teach me to see every gift, talent, and achievement I possess as a trust from You, not a trophy belonging to me.
- Holy Spirit, make me sensitive to the moment I begin to place myself above others, and grant me the courage to repent immediately.
- God, surround me with people who love me enough to speak truth into my life when pride begins to blind me to my own condition.
- Lord, I ask for the kind of humility that does not need applause, recognition, or a seat at the head of the table to feel secure.
- Father, let the grace You reserve for the humble flow freely over my life, my household, and every work of my hands.
- Remove from me every 'I' that competes with Your glory, and replace it with a heart that says 'not I, but Christ' in every season.
- Lord, let the story of my life be one of faithful dependence on Your mercy rather than confidence in my own strength or brilliance.
Declarations
- I choose humility as a daily lifestyle, knowing that God's grace is my greatest advantage and His mercy the reason I still stand.
- I declare that my gifts and abilities are God-given, and I will steward them with a grateful, open hand rather than a clenched, boastful fist.
- Pride has no lasting throne in my heart, I pull it down today and enthrone the lordship of Jesus Christ in its place.
- Because I walk in humility, I am positioned for divine elevation at the right time and in the right way, according to God's perfect plan.
- I will not allow success to become a wall between me and the people God has placed in my life, I remain accessible, teachable, and grateful.
Reflection
Take sixty seconds today to honestly count how many times the word ‘I’ dominates your conversations, your prayers, and even your private thoughts. Humility is not self-erasure, it is the quiet, settled confidence that God is the source, and you are the vessel. When that truth stays alive in you, every gift you carry becomes a bridge to others rather than a barrier above them.
