Memory verse: I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. – Luke 17:34 (KJV)

Years ago, I travelled to the USA and stayed in an apartment that had a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and a living room with a guest toilet. In the middle of the night, I woke up to use the toilet and realised that my wife was not in the bedroom with me. I thought she had gone to use the guest toilet in the living room so as not to disturb my sleep. However, after waiting for a while and not seeing her, I went to check the living room and discovered that she was neither there nor in the guest toilet. I began to tremble, and I said, “God, where have I missed it? What is it that caused me to be left behind?” I thought the rapture had happened, and my wife had been taken, and I had been left behind. I was still trembling when the Holy Spirit said, “She didn’t come with you on this trip.” It was then that I remembered I had come on the trip alone. That is how conscious I always am of the rapture. It is better to live ready than to be careless and be left behind when the Lord returns.

As I said two days ago, from the moment I learnt about the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer every night before bed has always been, “Lord, if you return before tomorrow, please don’t leave me behind.” I pray that when the Lord returns, you will not be left behind, in Jesus’ name. The realisation that tomorrow may never come and that the Lord may return before sunrise tomorrow has kept me on my toes all these years.

Nobody knows the hour the Lord will return. This is why you must live ready. You cannot afford to live carelessly because you do not know when your time on earth will elapse or when the Lord will return. Today’s Bible reading compares two servants. One was faithful and wise, and he lived ready, doing his master’s will until his return. The other was described as evil because he thought in his heart that his lord delayed his coming, and because of that, he began to act and live as he pleased. The Bible tells us that he was severely punished when his lord returned.

Beloved, don’t live carelessly because you think the Lord is delaying His return. He is coming soon. Blessed are those who live ready for His return.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord Jesus, cultivate in me a genuine, daily consciousness of Your return, one that shapes every choice I make and every word I speak.
  • Father, search my heart and reveal any area where I have grown spiritually complacent or started living as though Your coming is far away.
  • Holy Spirit, help me to be found faithful in whatever assignment God has placed in my hands, so that I will not be ashamed when the Master arrives.
  • Lord, I pray for everyone I love by name, draw them close to You and let none of them be left behind when You appear in glory.
  • God, guard me against the subtle lie that there is still plenty of time to get right with You. Keep eternity fresh before my eyes every morning I wake.
  • Father, where my devotion to You has become routine rather than relational, breathe fresh life into my walk with You starting today.
  • Lord, teach me to number my days wisely, so that I invest my time, gifts, and energy in things that will matter when You return.
  • Holy Spirit, let the reality of Christ's Second Coming not produce anxiety in me, but produce holiness, joy, and an urgency to share the Gospel with others.

Declarations

  • I am not caught off guard, I live each day surrendered to Christ, ready to meet Him whether in death or at His glorious return.
  • I refuse to let delay become an excuse for spiritual drift; my heart is awake, watchful, and rooted in the will of God.
  • I am a faithful steward of every opportunity, relationship, and resource God has entrusted to me until the day He calls me home.
  • The return of Jesus Christ is not a source of dread for me, it is my greatest hope, and I live in the light of that expectation.
  • I will not be left behind; I have placed my complete trust in Jesus, and I walk in obedience to Him day by day.

Reflection

Readiness for Christ’s return is less about perfect performance and more about persistent orientation, keeping your face turned toward Him through the ordinary and the extraordinary moments alike. Ask yourself honestly: if Jesus returned in the middle of your most private hour today, would your life reflect someone who has been expecting Him? Let that question not condemn you, but recalibrate you. Small, consistent acts of faithfulness, a prayer kept, a temptation resisted, a kindness shown, are how a ready heart is built, one day at a time.
