Gratitude is not a feeling we wait for, it is a posture we choose. Today’s Open Heaven devotional, written by Pastor E.A. Adeboye, invites us to stop measuring life by what is missing and start marveling at what God has already placed in our hands. If you have ever found yourself restless with wanting more while overlooking the quiet gifts already surrounding you, this word is for you. Let it recalibrate your heart before the day begins.

Bible reading: Psalm 103:1-5 (KJV)

Memory verse: That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. – Psalm 26:7 (KJV)

Some time ago, I went to a man’s house to conduct a programme. It was a night programme, and the owner of the house asked me to spend the night at his house afterwards because it was too late for me to return home. I obliged, and in the morning, he asked me to wait for breakfast. When it was time to eat, a chef came and asked my host what he wanted to eat. After so much back and forth, my host finally decided that he would have bread and eggs for breakfast. Then, for the next few minutes, another back-and-forth ensued because the chef asked my host how he wanted his eggs prepared – scrambled, poached, or fried – before he finally settled on boiled eggs. Then, it was time for another debate: how do you want your egg boiled, hard-boiled or medium-boiled? By then, it had been more than 25 minutes, and I had gotten really hungry. Finally, the chef turned to me when he finished with his boss and asked, “Sir, what will you eat?” I told him to give me anything he had. He said he had bread and eggs, and I said it was fine. Then, he asked if I wanted an omelette or bacon, the number of eggs I wanted, and so on. I told him that anything was fine, as long as it was enough to satisfy my hunger. After the whole ordeal, I thought to myself that even though I had no money, I had a good appetite at least. Child of God, while you may not have everything you desire in life yet, you must be grateful for the things you have.

Ecclesiastes 6:9 says that the sight of the eyes is better than the wandering of desire. Many people are not grateful for what they have because they are consumed with thinking about the things they want. They do not appreciate the things they can see because of their wandering desires. Beloved, if God has given you the gift of life, be grateful. Ecclesiastes 9:4 says that as long as you are joined to all the living, there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. As long as you are alive, there is hope that you will achieve the things you desire. Don’t be so focused on the things you wish you had that you forget to appreciate God for all you already have. In all things, give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, open my eyes to the blessings that are already present in my life, the ones I have grown too familiar with to notice anymore.
  • Father, uproot every seed of discontentment from my heart and replace it with a deep, settled thankfulness that does not depend on my circumstances.
  • I pray for everyone reading this who is struggling to find reasons to be grateful, meet them in their pain, Lord, and reveal Your goodness in tangible ways today.
  • God, help me never to take the gift of life for granted. Remind me daily that breath itself is a mercy and a sign that my story is not finished.
  • Deliver me from the trap of wandering desires that blind me to present blessings. Teach me to hold my wishes loosely and my gratitude firmly.
  • Lord, let a spirit of thanksgiving flow from me into every room I enter, may my praise become an encouragement to others who have lost sight of Your goodness.
  • Father, where hope has grown thin in my heart because things have not gone as planned, reignite it with the truth that a living faith always has a future.
  • I thank You, Lord, for every answered prayer I received and celebrated, and for every request still waiting, I trust Your timing over my impatience.

Declarations

  • I choose gratitude as my daily discipline; I will not allow unmet desires to silence my praise.
  • Because I am alive, I have hope, God is still writing my story and His pen has not run dry.
  • I declare that my eyes are open to the wonders God has already placed around me, and I will speak of them with a thankful voice.
  • Discontentment has no hold on me; I am rooted in the goodness of a God who has never failed to provide.
  • I will enter every season, plentiful or lean, with a heart that says, 'Thank You, Lord,' because He is worthy regardless of my circumstances.

Reflection

Take sixty seconds right now and write down three things you have today that you did not earn and could not have arranged on your own, perhaps your eyesight, a person who loves you, or simply the fact that you woke up. Gratitude grows most powerfully when it becomes specific rather than general, and that short list may be the most honest prayer you offer all day.
