Today’s Open Heaven devotional, written by Pastor E.A. Adeboye, reminds us that the name of God is not a religious formality, it is living armour for every believer. Whether you are walking through a season of pressure, fear, or spiritual warfare, this message is especially for you. As you engage with today’s word, let it settle deeply: you carry a name that heaven recognises and hell trembles at.

Bible reading: Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)
Memory verse: The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; – Psalm 20:1 (KJV)
Names are very powerful; they reveal many things about a person. For example, if you meet someone who bears the surname of the president of your country, you will be curious to know whether he or she is related to the president or not. When you discover that such a person is related to the president, you will automatically think that he or she is wealthy, influential, and has direct access to the president. This is also what obtains in our relationship with God. When a person is born again, he or she becomes a child of God. Such a person automatically takes on God’s name and has unhindered access to Him.
I still remember the first time a Head of State invited me to his home. When I arrived at the first gate, I was asked where I was going, and I replied, “The president asked me to come and see him.” The security personnel then checked their records to confirm my invitation. I scaled through the first gate, and when I got to the second gate, I was thoroughly checked. I got to the third gate, and the same check was carried out on me, despite the fact that the personnel at the gate saw that I had been checked at the second gate. When I moved on to the fourth gate, I said, “Oh God, I thank You because I have Jesus. I thank You because anytime I want to talk to You, all I have to say is ‘in the name of Jesus.” No matter how pressing an issue is, all I need to say is ‘in Jesus’ name’, and God’s ears will be open to my cry.
God’s name also shields believers from the enemy’s attacks. Proverbs 18:10 tells us that: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” In other words, if enemies are pursuing you, you can call on the name of the Lord; His name will become a strong tower around you, and the enemy will not be able to harm you. The Bible says in Psalm 27:1-3 that if your enemies are running after you and are about to catch up, they will stumble and fall. As we see in today’s Bible reading, every knee shall bow at the name of Jesus! I decree that the name of the Lord will be your shield, delivering you and your family from every attack of the enemy, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today
These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.
Prayer Points
- Lord, teach me to run to Your name instinctively, before worry, before panic, before I reach for any other solution.
- Father, let the reality of my identity as Your child become more vivid to me today than any circumstance I am facing.
- I ask that You silence every voice that tells me my access to You is limited or conditional, remind me afresh that the door is always open.
- God of Jacob, be a shield around my family this season; let no weapon fashioned in darkness find a foothold in our lives.
- Lord, where enemies have been advancing, let Your name become the strong tower that stops their progress and causes confusion in their camp.
- Holy Spirit, help me to pray with genuine confidence in the name of Jesus, not as a ritual phrase but as a living declaration of trust.
- Father, I intercede for every believer who feels spiritually exposed right now; surround them with the awareness of Your protecting name.
- Lord, let my life be a testimony that Your name is not just powerful in theory but actively at work in the details of everyday living.
Declarations
- I am a child of the Most High God, and His name is my rightful inheritance and my constant defence.
- Because I belong to Jesus, every gate that would block my access to the Father stands open, I am known, I am welcomed, I am covered.
- The name of the Lord surrounds me like a fortress; no scheme plotted against me in darkness can penetrate what God's name protects.
- I do not face today's battles alone, at the sound of Jesus' name, every opposition in my life is brought to its knees.
- My household stands under the banner of God's name, and we are shielded, sustained, and secure in Him today and always.
Reflection
Consider one area of your life where fear has been louder than faith lately, a relationship, a financial concern, a health matter. Instead of rehearsing the problem today, practise literally speaking the name of Jesus over it. Not as a quick fix, but as a deliberate act of trust that says: I believe this name carries weight beyond what I can see. Let that small habit become the beginning of a deeper, more instinctive dependence on God’s protecting presence.
