Today’s Open Heaven devotional from Pastor E.A. Adeboye is a timely word for every believer who has been running on empty, pouring out without pausing to be refilled. Through the story of a burned-out prophet and the rhythm God built into creation itself, this message gently reminds us that rest is not weakness; it is wisdom. Whether you are a minister, a caregiver, a student, or a working parent, this word is for you.

Bible reading: 1 Kings 19:4-8 (KJV)

Memory verse: And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. – Genesis 2:2 (KJV)

Elijah must have used up a lot of stored-up spiritual energy when he prayed, and fire fell from heaven in 1 Kings 18:36-38. After that, he drew upon the same reservoir of spiritual energy to summon rain from heaven. It had not rained for three and a half years, and the sky was absolutely clear, but he put a significant demand on his reservoir of spiritual energy by praying until it started raining (1 Kings 18:41-45). Furthermore, he used even more spiritual energy to run faster than the king’s chariot (1 Kings 18:46) for a distance that some Bible scholars estimate to be about seven kilometres. After doing all these, he hadn’t rested or taken time to recharge his spiritual energy when he received news that Queen Jezebel was after his life. His spiritual energy had been grossly depleted, so he ran for three days and nights to save his life. By the time he got to the juniper tree in today’s Bible reading, he was so weak and spiritually drained that he prayed to God to end his life. As soon as he said this prayer, he fell asleep because he had not slept for more than three days. The angel of the Lord came to wake him up to eat, and after eating, he fell asleep again, even though he was aware that Queen Jezebel was still after his life. The angel of the Lord had to wake him up a second time to eat again because he needed strength for the great journey ahead of him. You must also take time out to rest and recharge your spiritual energy if you want to run the race ahead of you successfully.

In Genesis 1:1-31, the Bible describes how God created one thing after another. It was a lot of work, but as the account progressed to Genesis 2:2, which is today’s memory verse, you will see that God rested. Beloved, you cannot be wiser than God. If God Himself rested after creation, then you must also create time to rest from time to time. Do not finish one demanding task after another without taking time to rest. Many people have overworked themselves to the point of exhaustion, but this is not God’s plan for anyone. He wants you to know when and how to take rests so you don’t burn yourself out.Find Local Churches

Beloved, I pray that the Almighty God will shower you with His wisdom so you will know how to preserve your strength, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, teach me to recognize the warning signs when my spiritual and physical reserves are running low, before I reach the point of collapse.
  • Father, forgive me for every season I treated rest as laziness rather than as a gift You ordained for my restoration.
  • Holy Spirit, help me build rhythms of renewal into my daily and weekly life so that I serve from a place of fullness and not from depletion.
  • God of all wisdom, grant me the discernment to know when to press forward and when to step back and be still before You.
  • Lord, I pray for every believer who is currently overwhelmed and spiritually exhausted, send Your angel to minister strength and nourishment to them as You did for Elijah.
  • Father, let me never run so fast in ministry or responsibility that I outpace Your grace and leave my soul behind.
  • Strengthen me, Lord, for the specific journey ahead of me, and let every form of rest I take become a divine recharge that prepares me for greater works.
  • Lord, help me model healthy boundaries and sacred rest to those around me, so that my life points others to a God who cares for the whole person.

Declarations

  • I declare that I am not too busy to rest, I intentionally pause, receive God's restoration, and return stronger.
  • I declare that my body, mind, and spirit are sustained by divine wisdom, and I will not burn out chasing what God has already ordained for me.
  • I declare that just as the angel of the Lord provided for Elijah, God makes provision for my journey, strength, nourishment, and renewed purpose.
  • I declare that rest is part of my calling, and I embrace it without guilt, knowing God accomplishes His purposes even while I sleep.
  • I declare that I run the race set before me with endurance, pacing myself by the Holy Spirit and not by the pressures of this world.

Reflection

Take a moment today to honestly assess your pace, not just your schedule, but the state of your inner life. If Elijah, one of the mightiest prophets in Scripture, needed an angel to put food in front of him and tell him to sleep, you are in good company when you acknowledge your limits. Consider one practical act of rest or spiritual refueling you can build into your week: a quiet morning, a digital fast, a walk without a podcast. God is not honored by your exhaustion; He is glorified when you steward His gift of life with care.
