Devotional: The Farmer Does Not Grow the Seed

There is something humbling about soil. You can till it, water it, and tend it faithfully, but you cannot make anything grow. The growth belongs to God alone. Tonight, that truth is an invitation, not a limitation.

You may have spent today striving harder to be better, more patient, more consistent, more fruitful. That striving is real, and God sees it. But 2 Corinthians 9:10 settles something important: “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” God is the supplier. God is the multiplier. Your role is not to manufacture fruit but to remain rooted in the One who grows it.

Andrew Murray wrote that abiding is not an occasional exercise but a continuous posture. Rootedness is not dramatic. It is daily, quiet, unhurried connection with Jesus, and out of that connection, righteousness increases in ways you could not produce on your own.

So tonight, lay down the striving. Let this prayer be the act of pressing your roots deeper into Him. The harvest He promised is already coming.

Night Prayer for June 21

Evening Spiritual Posture

Before you pray, slow your breathing and open your hands. You are not arriving before God to report on your performance. You are coming as a branch returning to the vine, trusting that the life you need flows from Him.

Main Scripture

2 Corinthians 9:10 (ESV): “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.”

Entering God’s Presence

Father, I come to You at the close of this day not as someone who has earned access but as someone who has been given it through Jesus Christ. You are the source of every good thing in my life, and I acknowledge that tonight.

I declare that You are the Lord of the harvest. Every seed of obedience, every act of faithfulness, and every moment of surrender in my life is in Your hands. I trust You with all of it.

Prayer for the Night

Lord, as I rest tonight, let my roots go deeper into You. Let this sleep be a renewal, not just of my body but of my connection to Your Word and Your Spirit. I ask that You protect my heart from the anxieties that would pull me away from abiding in You.

Guard my mind through the night. Let me wake tomorrow still planted in Your promises, still trusting in Your supply, still believing that the harvest of righteousness You have begun in me will continue to grow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Interceding for Others

Father, I lift every believer tonight who feels like their spiritual life is dry and unfruitful. Remind them that You are the multiplier, not them, and that a season of hiddenness does not mean a season of fruitlessness.

I pray for anyone striving in their own strength tonight. Draw them back to the vine. Let them find rest in Your sufficiency, and let righteousness increase in their lives as they return to abiding in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Personal Petition

Father, I need You to be the gardener in my life tonight. I confess that I have sometimes tried to grow what only You can grow, striving and performing instead of resting and abiding. I bring that weariness to You now.

Your Word says in John 15:5 (ESV) that apart from You I can do nothing. I believe that tonight. I am not asking You to bless my effort alone. I am asking You to let me stay so rooted in You that the fruit comes as a natural overflow of Your life in mine.

Increase the harvest of righteousness in my life as I remain rooted in You. Let patience grow where impatience has lived. Let generosity grow where self-protection has taken root. Let holiness deepen not through my discipline alone but through my dependence on Your Spirit, as Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) promises that the fruit of the Spirit is grown in those who walk with You.

I trust the process, Father. I trust the timing. I trust that You who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion, as Philippians 1:6 (NIV) declares. Tonight I rest in that promise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Rooted and Bearing Fruit
Be still, and know that He is God. (Psalm 46:10)

Powerful Prayer Points for Deeper Rest

Move slowly through each prayer point below, allowing the Word to shape your prayer.

  1. Father, supply and multiply every seed of faithfulness I have sown this season, and let the harvest of righteousness overflow in my daily life, in Jesus’ name. (2 Corinthians 9:10, ESV)
  2. Father, deepen my abiding so that I remain connected to the source of all true fruitfulness and do not drift into striving, in Jesus’ name. (John 15:4, ESV)
  3. Father, let the fruit of the Spirit grow visibly in my character so that others see Your life in me and are drawn to You, in Jesus’ name. (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV)
  4. Father, complete the good work You have started in me, and let nothing in this season cause me to doubt Your commitment to my growth, in Jesus’ name. (Philippians 1:6, NIV)

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding

The harvest of righteousness in 2 Corinthians 9:10 is not something you manufacture through effort. Paul’s language is agricultural: God supplies the seed, God multiplies it, and God increases the harvest. Your part is to remain in the right soil, planted in His Word, nourished by His Spirit, and tended by His grace. Rootedness is the condition; fruitfulness is the result. As Andrew Murray wrote, “The mightiest of all growing things, the tree, grows by abiding.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to remain rooted in God while praying for a harvest of righteousness

Remaining rooted means keeping your life consistently connected to God through His Word, prayer, and obedience rather than depending on spiritual bursts of effort. John 15:4 (ESV) calls this abiding, and it is the posture that makes fruitfulness possible. Righteousness grows in you the way fruit grows on a branch: not through straining but through staying.

How do I pray this prayer when my spiritual life feels more dry than fruitful

Dryness is not a sign that God has withdrawn His supply; it is often a sign that your roots need to go deeper. Pray honestly, tell God exactly where you feel dry, and ask Him to draw you back into abiding. Isaiah 58:11 (NIV) promises that God will guide you always and satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land, making you like a well-watered garden.

Final Encouragement

You do not have to produce what only God can grow. Tonight, your one act of faith is to stay rooted in Him, and that is enough. If you want to continue building a life of evening prayer, explore more prayers like this one in our evening prayers collection.
