Devotional: The Slow and Holy Work of Becoming

There is a particular frustration that comes when you know what you want to be and you are not there yet. You want to respond with love and you snap. You intend patience and you rush. You plan self-control and the moment arrives and it slips through your fingers like water. This is not failure. This is the field where God does His most deliberate work.

The word “fruit” in Galatians 5:22-23 is singular in the original Greek. Not fruits, plural, like a basket of separate items you pick up one at a time. One fruit, one life shaped by the Spirit, love and patience and self-control growing together the way sweetness and color and weight develop together in a single piece of fruit on a living branch. You cannot rush it. You cannot manufacture it. It grows from connection to the Vine.

What the Spirit produces in you, He produces by abiding, not by striving. Andrew Murray put it plainly: the branch does not struggle to bear fruit; it simply stays attached. Today’s prayer is not a request for God to hand you a virtue. It is an invitation for Him to do what only He can do: cultivate character from the inside out.

Father, I come before You with a grateful heart. You are the God who began a good work in me and You are faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6, CSB). I enter Your presence not by my effort but by the blood of Jesus, which has given me full and free access (Hebrews 10:19, CSB).

I lay down the weight of my own striving. I release every anxious attempt to fix myself. I receive Your presence as my portion and Your Spirit as my gardener today.
