Devotional – The Potter’s Wheel Never Stops
Have you ever watched a potter shape clay?
The wheel spins, the hands press, and slowly—sometimes painfully—the shapeless lump becomes something beautiful. The clay doesn’t become a vessel in one dramatic moment. It’s formed through constant, patient pressure.
Paul uses this exact image when he writes to the Galatians: “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19, NIV).
Here’s what you need to understand about that word “formed.” It’s not a one-time event—it’s an ongoing process. Christ isn’t just invited into your life; He’s being formed in you day by day, decision by decision, surrender by surrender.
Think about how God formed the first human. Genesis tells us He shaped Adam from the dust, breathed life into him, and man became a living being. But in Christ, God is doing something even more profound—He’s reshaping you from the inside out into the image of His Son.
Maybe you’re frustrated with yourself right now. Perhaps you snapped at your spouse this morning and thought, “I’m still struggling with the same anger issues after all these years.” Maybe you caught yourself in the same pattern of worry, the same cycle of fear, the same reaction you’ve been trying to overcome.
Maybe it’s a recurring sin that makes you wonder if you’re really changing at all—the addiction that keeps pulling you back, the critical spirit that poisons your relationships, the self-sabotage that derails every good thing God tries to do in your life. Or perhaps it’s deeper—identity wounds, rejection patterns, trust issues that seem wired into your DNA.
Here’s the revelation you need today: formation takes time, and the Potter is still working. Every time you choose obedience over convenience, every moment you surrender your will to His, every day you open yourself to His Word—Christ is being formed in you.
The clay doesn’t tell the Potter when to stop. You’re still on the wheel because the work isn’t finished. And that’s not failure—that’s faithfulness. God hasn’t given up on you. He’s actively shaping you into the image of Christ, one day at a time.
This isn’t about perfection by Christmas. It’s about cooperating with the Potter who won’t stop until His Son is fully formed in you.

We approach God today as clay in the Potter’s hands.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Galatians 4:19 reveals Paul’s pastoral heart—he wasn’t content with the Galatians merely accepting Christ. He longed to see Christ fully formed in them. This is the goal of all spiritual maturity: not just knowing about Jesus, but having His character, His mind, His heart formed in you.
Formation happens through cooperation with the Holy Spirit. You can’t form Christ in yourself through effort, but you can position yourself for transformation through surrender, obedience, and yielding to His work.
The process is often uncomfortable. Clay must be pressed, shaped, and sometimes broken down before it becomes a vessel. But every pressure has purpose—God wastes nothing in the formation process.
Watchman Nee wrote: “God is not concerned with making us happy but with making us holy. Not with our comfort but with our conformity to Christ.” The Potter’s goal isn’t to make you comfortable—it’s to make you Christlike.
Final Encouragement
You are not the person you were last year. You’re not even the person you were last month. The Potter has been working, even when you couldn’t see it.
Every moment you’ve chosen obedience over ease, every time you’ve surrendered your will to His, every day you’ve opened yourself to His Word—Christ has been formed in you a little more. Don’t despise the slow work. Don’t resent the process. Trust the Potter.
He knows exactly what pressure to apply, when to press harder, and when to let the clay rest. You’re in the hands of a Master Craftsman who has never ruined a single vessel He set out to form.
Say it boldly:
“Father, let Christ be formed in me daily—shape my thoughts, desires, and responses to reflect Jesus, in the name of Jesus!”
As you continue through today, return to God in evening prayer and watch for evidence that the Potter’s work is continuing.
Watch for moments when your first response looks more like Jesus than it used to. Watch for desires shifting from selfish to sacrificial. Watch for peace where panic used to live. The formation is happening.
