Devotional – The God Who Watches Over Your Coming and Going
There’s a moment at the end of every year when you look back and wonder how you made it.
The close calls. The near misses. The moments that could have gone terribly wrong but didn’t. The doors that opened when you didn’t even knock. The provision that arrived before you finished praying. The protection you didn’t know you needed until later.
That wasn’t luck. That was preservation.
Psalm 121:7-8 gives us one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture: “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (NIV). Read it slowly. He keeps you from harm. He watches over your life. He covers your going out. He covers your coming in. And He does it forever.
As this year draws to a close, you may be carrying unfinished business. Unanswered prayers. Lingering concerns about what’s ahead. But before you step into the uncertainty of a new season, hear this: the same God who preserved you through this year is already standing in the next one.
He’s not scrambling to figure out how to protect you. He’s already there. Already watching. Already keeping.
Today’s prayer isn’t a desperate plea for survival. It’s a confident declaration that the God who has preserved you this far will preserve you still. Every concern. Every step. Every door. Preserved.
Daily Spiritual Posture
Come with gratitude for every moment of protection you didn’t even notice. Trust the God who watches over your coming and your going. Release end-of-year anxieties into His preserving hands. Together, we rest in the assurance that He keeps us—now and forevermore.
Daily Prayer for December 19 2025
This is a day to acknowledge divine preservation. To thank God for keeping you. To entrust the closing of this year and the opening of the next into His watchful care. Let His Word anchor your confidence.
Main Scripture
Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV) “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
A Sacred Pause
Pause for 30 seconds. Think of one moment this year when God’s protection was unmistakably present. Thank Him quietly for watching over you.
Prayer of the Day
Father, I thank You for preserving me through this entire year. Your eyes have been on me every single day. You watched over my going out and my coming in. As this year closes, I trust You with everything still unfinished. Keep me from all harm as I step into the days ahead. I rest in the assurance that You are always watching.
Entering God’s Presence with Thanksgiving
Lord, I come before You with a heart overflowing with gratitude. You have kept me when I didn’t know danger was near. You have preserved my health, my family, my mind, and my faith. Thank You for every invisible rescue and every silent intervention. I praise You for being a God who never looks away. Your watchful care has been my constant covering.
A Moment of Reflection and Confession
Father, I confess that I haven’t always acknowledged Your preservation. I’ve taken for granted the protection that surrounded me daily. I’ve worried about tomorrow as if You weren’t already there. Forgive me for doubting Your watchful care. Forgive me for the anxiety that questioned Your keeping power. I return to trust. I return to rest. I return to You.
Interceding for Others
Lord, I pray for my family—preserve them as this year closes. Watch over their going out and their coming in. I lift up my church—keep every member under Your protective hand. Guard pastors and leaders from burnout and attack. I pray for believers around the world—may the global Church be preserved through every trial. Let not one of Your children be lost or harmed.
Personal Petition
Heavenly Father, In the mighty name of Jesus, O Lord, I stand on Your Word that says, “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7-8, NIV).
I take a moment to name my specific situation before You today.
Father, I declare that I am preserved by Your mighty hand. As this year closes, I entrust every unfinished matter to You. Preserve my health—let no sickness take root in my body. Preserve my peace—let no anxiety steal what You have given. Preserve my relationships—protect every connection You have ordained. Preserve my finances—guard my provision from loss or lack. Preserve my calling—keep me on the path You have set before me. Lord, I trust You with the unknown days ahead. What I cannot see, You are already watching over. I cancel every end-of-year attack planned against me and my household. I declare that I will cross into the new season whole, complete, and kept. Father, preserve me and all that concerns me—now and forevermore.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen!

Psalm or Verse for Meditation
Psalm 121:3-4 (NLT) “He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.”
Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Psalm 121 is called a Song of Ascents—one of the psalms pilgrims sang as they traveled up to Jerusalem for worship. The journey was long and dangerous. Bandits lurked along the roads. The terrain was unforgiving. Travelers needed more than courage. They needed a Keeper.
And that’s exactly what this psalm proclaims. The Lord is your Keeper. Not “might be.” Is. Present tense. Continuous. Unwavering.
Notice the repetition: He watches. He keeps. He preserves. He doesn’t slumber. He doesn’t sleep. This isn’t occasional attention—it’s constant vigilance. God’s protection isn’t a part-time job. It’s His nature.
As the year closes, you may feel the weight of all that’s unfinished. But God isn’t wringing His hands. He’s watching. He’s keeping. He’s already standing in tomorrow, ready to preserve you there too.
As Corrie ten Boom once said: “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.”
Prayer Prompt Faith Activity
- Write down three specific ways God preserved you this year—seen or unseen.
- Speak Psalm 121:7-8 over yourself and your household as a closing-year declaration.
- Identify one concern you’re carrying into the new year and surrender it to God’s keeping.
- Thank God tonight for watching over you even while you sleep.
Final Encouragement
The year is closing. But God isn’t closing His eyes.
He watched over you in January when you didn’t know what was coming. He kept you in the chaos of midyear. He preserved you through every storm, every setback, every uncertainty. And He’s not about to stop now.
As you step into these final days of the year, don’t carry the weight of preservation yourself. That’s His job. Your job is to trust. To rest. To declare that the Lord who has kept you this far will keep you still.
He never slumbers. He never sleeps. And He never stops watching over you.
Say it with confidence: “Lord, preserve me and all that concerns me as this year closes—in Jesus’ name!”
As evening falls, return to His presence once more. Evening Prayers can help you close the day secure in His watchful care.
Watch Today For…
Watch for moments of quiet assurance that God is watching over you. Watch for peace replacing end-of-year anxiety. Watch for gratitude rising as you remember all the ways He has preserved you this year.
