Bible reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (KJV)

Memory verse: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. – Luke 6:38 (KJV)

Many years ago, God asked me what kind of pastor I wanted to be. He asked, “Do you want to be the best or the worst?” I told Him that I want to be the best. He asked further if l want to be the poorest or the richest, and I said that I want to be the richest. I have experienced being poor, and I can tell you that it is not good. For instance, for the first 18 years of my life, I had no pair of shoes because my parents could not afford any.

Shortly after God asked me what kind of pastor I wanted to be, I was at a church gathering, and it was time to give our offerings. Suddenly, God repeated the question He had asked me earlier, and I replied, “The greatest, the best, and the richest.” Then, He said, “Give Me the biggest currency note in your pocket.” That was hard, because it was a lot of money. I almost shouted, “Get behind me, satan,” but I know God’s voice, so I stammered, “Yes, yes, Lord.” Not long after that, there was another gathering, and He asked the same question again. I gave the same answer, and He said, “Double what you have been giving Me,” so I doubled it. Not long after that, He asked me to triple it. I did, and then He began to act. Every day, different people would approach me to give me something, so I started to expect it. One day, I was about to sleep when I remembered that no one had approached me to give me anything. I told God, “Daddy, I didn’t receive Your messenger today. Nobody gave me anything today.” Around midnight, somebody knocked on my door and said, “Sir, God asked me to give you this.” I asked the fellow how he could be out that late, and he said, “I know that the God who sent me to you will take care of me.”

Beloved, let me ask you, “What kind of Christian would you like to be, a poor one or a rich one?” I want you to trust God and let Him prove Himself in your life as the Almighty Supplier. Give to Him continually out of the resources He has blessed you with, and I can assure you that a time will come when you will say to Him, “God, are these blessings not becoming too much?”

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, awaken in me a spirit of cheerful generosity that flows from a heart fully persuaded of Your faithfulness, not from obligation or fear.
  • Father, wherever scarcity has shaped my thinking about money and giving, renew my mind with the truth of Your Word and Your unlimited capacity to supply.
  • God, teach me to hear Your voice clearly in moments of giving, just as You speak in moments of prayer, so that I may respond with swift and joyful obedience.
  • Lord, I ask You to break every agreement I have made with a poverty mindset, and replace it with the bold confidence of a child who knows their Father owns everything.
  • Father, raise up divine messengers in my life, people through whom You channel Your provision, and give me eyes of faith to recognize Your hand at work.
  • God, help me to give not only out of abundance but also in seasons of scarcity, trusting that the measure I release is the measure You return pressed down and overflowing.
  • Lord, make me a consistent and faithful steward who honors You with first fruits, tithes, offerings, and spontaneous acts of generosity throughout every season of life.
  • Father, let my testimony of Your provision become a living witness that draws others into a deeper trust of You as their Almighty Supplier.

Declarations

  • I am a generous giver, and because I sow bountifully, I reap bountifully according to the promise of God's Word.
  • I refuse to let fear govern my finances; I give in faith knowing that my heavenly Father replenishes every seed I plant in His kingdom.
  • The windows of heaven are open over my life, and I walk daily in the overflow of God's provision because I honor Him with what He has entrusted to me.
  • I hear God's voice clearly and obey promptly, even when His instructions stretch my comfort, because I trust His character and His track record.
  • Lack does not define me, I am the child of the God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and His abundance is my inheritance.

Reflection

Take a moment to honestly examine your current relationship with giving. Is it driven by routine, reluctance, or real faith? Today’s devotional challenges us to move beyond token offerings into a posture of progressive, Spirit-led generosity, where each act of giving is a conscious vote of confidence in God’s ability to provide. Choose one practical step this week: increase your regular giving by even a small margin, respond to a prompt to bless someone around you, or simply tell God you are willing to obey the next time He asks. Small steps of obedience compound into the kind of testimony that astonishes even you.
