There is a reason you are here, not a vague, general reason, but a specific, God-breathed assignment that existed before your first breath. Today’s Open Heaven devotional, written by Pastor E.A. Adeboye, invites us to stop drifting and start following the One whose light alone can reveal that assignment. If you have ever felt like you are working hard but somehow heading in the wrong direction, this word is for you.

Bible reading: Acts 9:3-6 (KJV)

Memory verse: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. – John 8:12 (KJV)

In Galatians 1:15, Apostle Paul said that God separated him to Himself while he was still in his mother’s womb. However, he didn’t know God’s plan for his life until he met Christ in Acts 9:3-6, as we see in today’s Bible reading.

Many people live and die without discovering why God sent them to the world. For instance, some people think that they are meant to be teachers when, in fact, God meant for them to be tailors, so they struggle through life without making much progress. Some people, however, discover God’s purpose for their lives early, and they keep on succeeding.

Before I met Christ, my ambition was to be the youngest Vice Chancellor (VC) in Africa. I thought that was what I was supposed to do in life. I was doing quite well, and at a very young age, I became the acting Head of the Mathematics Department at a Federal University in Nigeria. I had already completed the interview process to become a full professor, and I was expecting to start using the title Professor in a few months when God called me into full-time ministry. I never became the youngest VC in Africa, but today, many VCs call me Daddy. Even though I never became a VC, God has started a university through me by His grace. I pray for you today that you will discover God’s plan for your life and fulfil it, in Jesus’ name.

Beloved, following Jesus Christ closely is the only way you can discover God’s purpose for your life. When His light shines on you, it will point you in the direction you should go. Paul discovered his purpose because the light of God shone on him in Acts 9:3-6. Until that light came, he was living contrary to God’s plan for his life, even though he thought he was fulfilling God’s purpose. Some people are actively climbing career and ministerial ladders that are leaning on the wrong wall. It is only after they have reached the top that they realize that they have been working fervently in a space that God has not called them into. I pray that such will never be your story. May you not labour in an area God has not called you to, in Jesus’ name. The light of God will shine on you, and it will direct and empower you to fulfil your purpose, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, illuminate every shadowy area of my life where I have been operating outside Your specific calling, and draw me firmly back to the path You ordained for me before I was born.
  • Father, give me the courage to release ambitions, positions, and plans that look good to others but were never authored by You, just as Paul surrendered his entire career trajectory at the sound of Your voice.
  • Holy Spirit, let Your light shine on my blind spots, reveal any ladder I am climbing that is leaning against the wrong wall, before I invest more years ascending it.
  • God, I pray for every person in my family and community who is living and labouring without knowing why You placed them on this earth, meet them, as You met Paul, with an unmistakable moment of clarity.
  • Lord, protect me from the trap of comparing my purpose with others'; help me understand that the assignment You have for me is not inferior because it looks different from what the world celebrates.
  • Father, grant me the patience to remain in Your light daily through prayer and Your Word, so that my purpose is not a one-time discovery but a continuously unfolding revelation.
  • Jesus, You are the Light of the world, shine into every decision I face this season and make the right path so clear that I cannot mistake it for any other.
  • Lord, let my fulfilment of purpose bring glory to Your name and genuine blessing to the generation I am called to serve, so that my life becomes a testimony of Your faithfulness.

Declarations

  • I am not an accident, I was set apart by God before my birth, and I declare that I will walk fully in the specific purpose He has prepared for me.
  • The light of Jesus Christ exposes every wrong direction in my life, and I declare that I will not waste years climbing a ladder that is leaning on the wrong wall.
  • I declare that I will not live and die with my God-given assignment undiscovered, Heaven's spotlight is shining on my path right now.
  • I choose to follow Jesus closely, because in His presence the blueprint of my life becomes clear, and I declare that clarity is mine today.
  • I declare that the gifts, opportunities, and doors that align with God's true calling for my life will find me as I remain yielded to His leading.

Reflection

Take five quiet minutes today to honestly ask yourself whether the goals you are pursuing feel Spirit-led or simply self-selected. Write down one area of your life where you sense restlessness or stagnation, and bring it before God as an open question rather than a settled conclusion. Purpose rarely arrives all at once; it unfolds step by step as we stay close enough to Jesus to hear His next instruction. Your willingness to ask the question is itself an act of faith.
