Today’s Open Heaven devotional, written by Pastor E.A. Adeboye, holds up the mirror of Nebuchadnezzar’s life so we can honestly examine our own hearts. Pride is rarely loud at first, it often creeps in quietly as we begin to credit ourselves for gifts that were always God’s to give. Whether you lead a household, a business, or a nation, this message is an invitation to reset your heart before God has to reset it for you.

Topic: Pride Comes Before A Fall (1)

Devotional: Open Heaven (RCCG)

Date: 2026-09-13

Bible reading: Daniel 4:29-37 (KJV)

Memory verse: The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. – Psalm 10:4 (KJV)

God made Nebuchadnezzar a great king, but pride entered into his heart, and he began to parade himself as a self-made man. God admonished him to be careful and make his way right (Daniel 4:1-27), but he didn’t heed the counsel. He woke up one morning and began to boast, “Look at the empire I have built; see how far my wisdom and understanding have brought me.” God looked at him from heaven and said, “Alright, mighty king, I am removing you from your kingdom. Go and join the animals in the field for seven years. Eat with them, and look like them, then we will know who is really in charge.” Immediately, the king lost his senses and joined the animals in the field. After seven years, however, the merciful God restored his senses, and he praised the most High God.

And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: – Daniel 4:34

As soon as he acknowledged the Most High as the One with all dominion and authority, the glory of his kingdom was restored to him.

At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. – Daniel 4:36

Romans 1:28 says that because some people chose not to retain God in their knowledge, He gave them over to a reprobate mind to do things which are not convenient. When people refuse to acknowledge God’s power, might, and authority over all of creation, they begin to act like animals or even worse. For example, in recent times, we have seen men who call themselves women and have even gone as far as surgically removing their private parts so that they can appear as women, and some women doing likewise. People who engage in such depraved behaviour have failed to retain God in their knowledge and have been given over to reprobate minds.

Beloved, acknowledge God in all your ways and shun pride. Those who allow pride in any form into their hearts are only giving the devil a chance to destroy them.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, search every corner of my heart and expose any root of pride I have allowed to take hold without realising it.
  • Father, teach me to hold every blessing You have given me with open hands, always tracing its source back to Your grace.
  • Give me a spirit of genuine humility that does not perform modesty on the outside while harbouring self-sufficiency on the inside.
  • Like Nebuchadnezzar's eyes lifted toward heaven after seven years, may I never need a season of breaking before I look up to You.
  • Lord, guard my mind against a reprobate way of thinking; keep me anchored in Your truth even when the culture around me drifts from it.
  • Where I have boasted in my achievements, my education, or my connections without honouring You, I ask for forgiveness and a renewed perspective.
  • Strengthen me to heed Your counsel the first time, so that correction never has to become crisis in my life.
  • Father, let the acknowledgement of Your sovereignty be so deep in me that humility becomes my natural posture rather than a spiritual discipline I struggle to maintain.

Declarations

  • I declare that every gift, talent, and accomplishment in my life flows from God alone, and I will not take credit that belongs to Him.
  • I am a vessel of honour because I choose to keep God at the centre of my thoughts, my plans, and my ambitions.
  • Pride has no dwelling place in me; I shut every door that would give the enemy access through a lifted heart.
  • I declare that God's dominion over my life is everlasting, and I joyfully submit every area of my existence to His authority.
  • Because I acknowledge God in all my ways, He directs my paths and my honour is secure in His hands.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment today to trace your last major achievement back to its true source, the health to pursue it, the mind to conceive it, the people God placed around you to support it. Gratitude is the practical antidote to pride. When thanksgiving becomes a daily habit, there is simply no room left for a boastful spirit to settle in.
