Today’s Open Heaven devotional invites you into one of the most encouraging truths in Scripture: God’s promotions arrive suddenly, sovereignly, and without asking for your credentials. If you have ever felt overlooked, underestimated, or quietly faithful in a season that seems to go unnoticed, this message is a personal word for you. Pastor E.A. Adeboye reminds us through Joshua’s story that God delights in lifting the humble to places that leave the proud speechless. Settle into today’s reading and let faith rise in your heart.

Bible reading: Joshua 1:1-9 (KJV)

Memory verse: For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: – 1 Corinthians 1:26 (KJV)

The word ‘minister in the olden days basically referred to a servant who ran all sorts of errands for his or her master. Such errands would often include emptying and washing the master’s chamber pot, doing the master’s laundry, washing his feet, and the like.

While Moses was alive, Joshua was his minister, so you can imagine how shocking it must have been for the latter when God informed him that he was to become the leader of Israel after his master’s demise. This is a good example of an accelerated and extraordinary promotion. The promotion was so sudden that Joshua became very anxious over the weight of his new responsibility. I know this because in today’s Bible reading, God had to tell him three times to be strong and of good courage. I decree today that God will promote you in such a manner, in Jesus’ name.

Whenever I see people struggling for promotion and desiring to be in leadership positions, I know it is because they do not understand God’s ways. God never gives accelerated and extraordinary promotions to the wise or the qualified. He never gives it to those who think they are brilliant enough to explain the scientific permutations behind His workings. He always uses the foolish and weak things to confound the wise and mighty things (1 Corinthians 1:27). Therefore, people who think they are strong and wise enough to work out their promotion should not expect accelerated and extraordinary promotions from God because He only accelerates the promotion of those who will never take His glory for themselves.

On the day my wife and I got married at the marriage registry, we met a lady there who was dressed in a wedding gown. However, she wasn’t with her groom; the man had abandoned her. The lady nearly ran mad, but she survived. After some time, she married a soldier. Unknown to her, the man who jilted her on their wedding day also joined the army. Then God moved. A military coup occurred, and her husband was made a military governor. Incidentally, the man who jilted her was assigned as her husband’s aide-de-camp. Thus, anytime she wanted to enter a car, it was her former husband-to-be who would open the door for her since she was the wife of a military governor.

Beloved, I decree today that God will accelerate your promotion, and all those who have been mocking you will be confounded, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, I surrender every striving and self-promotion to You today. Let my ambition be shaped entirely by Your sovereign hand and Your perfect timing.
  • Father, cultivate in me a servant's heart that is genuinely content to carry the basin and the towel, trusting that You alone open doors no man can shut.
  • God of Joshua, grant me the courage to step into every new territory You assign to me, even when the weight of responsibility feels overwhelming and unfamiliar.
  • Lord, silence every voice of anxiety that tells me I am unqualified. Remind me that Your call carries its own equipping, and Your grace is more than sufficient.
  • Heavenly Father, let my life be a vessel You can trust with honour, one that will deflect every spotlight back to Your name and never claim Your glory as my own.
  • I pray for everyone walking through a season of being jilted, rejected, or set aside by people who underestimated them. Let Your turnaround be so complete that it testifies of Your faithfulness.
  • Lord, go ahead of me today and rearrange circumstances, conversations, and connections in ways that only You could orchestrate, for the sake of Your kingdom purposes.
  • Father, let the fruit of this promotion, whenever it comes, bear Your fingerprints so clearly that even those who mocked my journey will recognise that You did it.

Declarations

  • I am not promoted by the strength of my résumé but by the favour of a God who chooses the unlikely to display His glory, and I walk in that favour today.
  • My season of humble service is not wasted, it is the very training ground where God is preparing me for the extraordinary assignment that lies ahead.
  • I refuse to compete, manipulate, or force doors open; I trust that what God has appointed for me cannot be stolen, delayed, or cancelled by any human decision.
  • Every disappointment and rejection in my past is being woven by God into a testimony that will confound those who counted me out.
  • I stand firm and courageous in this moment, knowing that the same God who spoke to Joshua speaks over my life, and His word does not return to Him empty.

Reflection

Take a moment today to examine where you might be straining to engineer your own advancement. The invitation in Joshua’s story is not passivity but surrendered faithfulness, showing up fully in the role you currently hold, however small it feels, and trusting God to decide when and how the next chapter begins. True promotion from God often looks like a surprise to everyone except Him, so keep serving, keep your hands clean, and keep your eyes on the One who holds every open door.
