Today’s Open Heaven devotional carries a message that many hearts have quietly needed to hear: the story you were born into does not write the story God intends to finish. Pastor E.A. Adeboye draws from scripture to remind us that obscurity in the eyes of the world is never obscurity in the eyes of Heaven. If you have ever felt disqualified by your family name, your past, or your starting point in life, this devotional is written for you. Pull up a chair, God has something to say.

Topic: Your Background Does Not Matter

Bible reading: 1 Samuel 2:2-9 (KJV)
Memory verse: He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; – Psalm 113:7 (KJV)
In (1 Kings 17:1), the Bible introduces us to a man of God named Elijah. Interestingly, the Bible did not even mention his father’s name. It is even more interesting when you consider that even Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, had his father’s name mentioned in the Bible, as he was referred to as blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus (Mark 10:46). His father was recognised, even though he was a beggar. In Elijah’s case, however, it was quite different, as the Bible only mentioned the name of his town – even his tribe was not mentioned. I can relate well to this because I am also the son of someone people might call a nobody. This is why I am convinced that if God can achieve great things through Elijah and me, despite our obscure backgrounds, He can achieve even greater things through anyone.
When it comes to what God can do in a person’s life, who they are, where they come from, their family background, as well as their social and financial status, do not matter. In (1 Timothy 1:15), Apostle Paul said that he was the chief of sinners. Before he died, however, he was able to boldly say in (2 Corinthians 11:5), “…I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.” It does not matter how lowly you might have started out in life; God can elevate you to the top. I pray for you today that no matter what your past looked like, the grace of God will lift you to the very top, in Jesus’ name.
Beloved, I want you to know that if you completely surrender your life to God, you will end up in glory. Elijah’s father’s name was not mentioned in the Bible because it was not a factor in the things God wanted to do in the prophet’s life. No matter who your earthly father is, if God is your heavenly Father, you are a prime candidate for His glory. He delights in using the foolish things of this world to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27). If people mock and despise you because of your background, please don’t be bothered. Just ensure that you surrender your life to Jesus, and He will elevate you. As we see in today’s Bible reading, He raises beggars from the dunghill to set them among princes and makes them inherit the throne of glory.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today
These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.
Prayer Points
- Lord, wherever shame about my background has taken root in my heart, uproot it today and replace it with a settled confidence in Your sovereign choice of me.
- Father, just as You raised Elijah from anonymity to national significance, raise me from every place of hiddenness into the purpose You prepared for me before I was born.
- God, I pray for every person reading this who has been mocked or dismissed because of where they come from, let Your hand of elevation rest upon them in a way that silences every voice of ridicule.
- Holy Spirit, where I have used my background as an excuse to shrink back, convict me gently and stir fresh courage within me to step into all You are calling me toward.
- Lord, I surrender the narrative others have written over my life. Rewrite it according to Your mercy, and let the final chapter bring glory only to Your name.
- Father, like Hannah who prayed through her own desperate place and saw You move, teach me to bring every limitation before You in prayer rather than accepting it as destiny.
- God, I ask that the grace You poured out on Paul, transforming his darkest chapter into his greatest testimony, flow freely through my own story for Your glory.
- Lord, let nothing about where I come from become a ceiling over where You intend to take me. I trust You as the God who lifts the lowly and seats them in high places.
Declarations
- I am not defined by my family name, my financial history, or the opinions of those who underestimated me, I am defined by the God who called me by name.
- My background is not a barrier to God's plan; it is the very backdrop against which His glory will shine most brightly in my life.
- I declare that every limitation assigned to me by birth, by circumstance, or by the words of others is broken, because whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
- I am a candidate for God's glory, not because of who my earthly parents are, but because the Most High God has chosen to call Himself my Father.
- I will not despise my small beginnings, for the God who numbers the stars also numbers the steps of the humble, and He does not lose count of mine.
Reflection
Take a moment today to identify one area of your life where you have quietly accepted a low ceiling, a dream deferred, an opportunity not pursued, a calling left unvoiced, because some part of you still believed your background disqualified you. Write it down. Then place it, quite literally or symbolically, before God in prayer. Surrender is not passive resignation; it is the active decision to hand your story to the only Author who knows how it ends. The same God who made a nameless Tishbite the greatest prophet of his era is the God who holds your name, and He knows exactly what He plans to do with it.
