Today’s Open Heaven devotional from Pastor E.A. Adeboye cuts through one of the most seductive lies of our age — the idea that a full bank account is proof of God’s favour. If you’ve ever quietly measured your spiritual standing by your financial standing, or felt unsettled watching seemingly ungodly people thrive, this word is for you. Pull up a chair, quiet your heart, and let Scripture reorient your definition of true wealth.

Bible reading: Luke 12:16-21 (KJV)
Memory verse: Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; – 1 Timothy 6:17 (KJV)
Many years ago, a fellow believer said he wanted to change to another religion because he had observed that many of those who practise this other religion are very rich. I quickly made him realise that being wealthy is not a function of religion, nor is it an indication of godliness. Genesis 4:16-17 tells us that Cain built a city after he departed from the presence of the Lord. Building a city is a mighty feat; however, Cain was no longer dwelling in God’s presence when he built that city. Don’t be deceived into thinking that every green and flourishing branch is connected to the root, as some branches will remain green and seemingly healthy for a while even after they have been cut from the tree. Eventually, however, they will turn yellow and wither away.
It is true that God blesses His children with the power to make wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18); however, wealth in itself should never be used as a measure of godliness. God measures our godliness by our fruit (Matthew 7:16). When His children bear the right fruit, He blesses them, and one of the signs of His blessing is wealth, as seen in the life of Abraham, who was rich in cattle, silver, and gold (Genesis 13:2). Isaac was also a godly and prosperous person. The Bible says in Genesis 26:12-14 that he waxed richer and richer until he became exceedingly great and prosperous.
God wants you to be wealthy because He loves blessing His children with good gifts (Matthew 7:11). However, He doesn’t want you to measure your life by the abundance or scarcity of your material possessions (Luke 12:15). Money is a tool, and when God entrusts you with it, He wants you to be faithful with it. He wants you to be rich towards Him and use the treasures He has given you to bring glory to Him. In today’s Bible reading, the rich fool didn’t understand that he was meant to be a good steward of his wealth. His life was cut short because he was not rich towards God and didn’t acknowledge Him as his source; rather, he decided to lay up treasures for himself.
Beloved, God places more value on your fellowship with Him and the state of your heart (1 Peter 3:4) than your material possessions or the amount of money in your bank account. Let your focus be on cultivating true prosperity, which is the prosperity of your soul (3 John 2), and not material things.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today
These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content — declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.
Prayer Points
- Lord, guard my heart from the subtle temptation to equate material success with spiritual standing — in my own life and in how I judge others.
- Father, give me the wisdom to distinguish between blessings that flow from Your hand and prosperity that is disconnected from Your presence.
- Search me, O God, and reveal any area where I have been trusting in resources rather than in You as my ultimate source and sustainer.
- Teach me to be a faithful steward of every resource You entrust to me, so that my wealth serves Your Kingdom rather than merely my comfort.
- Lord, cultivate in me a soul that genuinely prospers — in faith, in love, in character — so that my inner life mirrors what You value most.
- Break every mindset in me that measures a person's worth or godliness by what they own, and replace it with the way You see people.
- Father, keep me rooted deeply in You so that I never become a branch that looks green on the outside while quietly drifting from the vine.
- Grant me a generous heart that uses every material blessing as a tool to bring glory to Your name and meet the needs of those around me.
Declarations
- I declare that my identity and spiritual worth are rooted in my relationship with God, not in the size of my income or the scope of my possessions.
- I am a faithful steward — everything entrusted to me by God, I will use to honour Him and advance His purposes on the earth.
- I declare that my soul prospers; I am growing in faith, wisdom, and Christlike character, and that is my truest measure of success.
- I will not be deceived by outward appearances of prosperity — I choose to pursue the presence of God above every earthly gain.
- I am rich toward God; my heart is anchored in the living God who generously provides all things for my genuine enjoyment and His glory.
Reflection
Take a quiet moment today to audit not your bank balance but your heart’s posture. Ask yourself: when you see someone thriving, is your first instinct to assume they are blessed by God — or to question what fruit their life is actually bearing? Godliness shows up in how we treat people, how humbly we hold what we have, and whether we acknowledge God in the ordinary moments of provision. Wealth is a tool; make sure yours is pointed in the right direction.
