Today’s Open Heaven devotional carries a word that many of us need but few of us want to hear — a loving, firm call to examine the company we keep. Pastor E.A. Adeboye draws our attention to the quiet but powerful way our closest friendships shape our spiritual temperature. Whether you are a young believer navigating peer pressure or a mature Christian who has slowly drifted through casual associations, this message speaks directly to you. Let it be an invitation not to isolation, but to intentional, faith-building community.

Topic: Mind Your Friends

Devotional: Open Heaven (RCCG)

Bible reading: 2 Corinthians 6:14-17 (KJV)

Memory verse: Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. – 1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)

Many Christians profess to be children of God; however, they still maintain really close friendships with unbelievers and are heavily influenced negatively by such relationships. They attend church regularly, but they have friends who want nothing to do with the Church. Christians such as this might hear God’s word regularly and even be involved in the various church activities; however, when they are in the midst of their friends, they never discuss the things of God with them. Eventually, their association with such friends becomes a thorn that chokes God’s word in their hearts.

Today’s Bible reading admonishes us to be separate from the world because light has nothing to do with darkness. Believe me, it is easier for a fellow to be brought down than to be pulled up by another fellow. This means that it is easier for friends who are unbelievers to pull down a Christian than for the Christian to pull such friends up. This is why Paul advised Christians not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

Beloved, if you have friends who are worldly, you most likely will begin to care so much about worldly things, and James 4:4 tells us that friendship with the world is enmity with God. When your close friends always speak ill about God, the Church, and men of God, you will likely begin to mock the things of God. In 2 Timothy 4:10, Paul told us about a young man named Demas who was his companion on some of his missionary journeys but eventually forsook him and left the faith because he loved the world. When a fellow allows unholy friends to introduce little foxes like ungodly habits, unrighteous conversations, and immoral behaviour into his or her life, it will eventually ruin the fellow (Song of Solomon 2:15).

Are there wild desires or ungodly habits in your life that can be traced to your association with some of your friends? Break up with such desires and habits so that you won’t sow among thorns and miss out on God’s blessings or be pushed out of your purpose like Demas. Furthermore, dissociate yourself from unholy friends and begin to cultivate a more intimate relationship with God and other believers who can influence you positively and help strengthen your faith. I pray that the Almighty God will guide you to cultivate relationships with godly people that will influence you to be more committed to Him and strengthen you to fulfil His purpose for your life, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content — declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, give me the courage and clarity to honestly evaluate every significant relationship in my life through the lens of Your Word.
  • Father, where unhealthy associations have already left marks on my character, release Your healing and restoration over my heart today.
  • Holy Spirit, help me to be a genuine light to unbelieving friends without being dimmed or dragged down by their influence.
  • God, connect me with at least one spiritually mature believer who will sharpen me, hold me accountable, and point me closer to You.
  • Lord, I surrender every worldly habit or desire I have picked up through wrong company — uproot them completely from my life.
  • Father, guard my tongue in every social circle so that my words consistently honour You and never become a source of shame before Your throne.
  • Like Demas turned away, many have been lost through the pull of the world — Lord, anchor my heart so deeply in Your purpose that no friendship can drift me from it.
  • God, bless every godly relationship in my life; let those bonds grow stronger, sweeter, and more fruitful for Your kingdom.

Declarations

  • I choose relationships that build my faith and draw me deeper into God's purpose for my life.
  • The Word of God is deeply rooted in my heart, and no ungodly influence can choke it out or silence its fruit in me.
  • I am not defined by the company I once kept; I am defined by the God who called me, and I walk confidently in that identity.
  • I have the wisdom to discern between friendships that refine me and associations that compromise me, and I choose wisely.
  • My inner circle reflects the kingdom, and together we sharpen one another in love, truth, and devotion to Christ.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment today and think about the three or four people who have the most access to your unguarded self — the ones you laugh with, vent to, and spend unhurried time with. Now ask honestly: after time with them, do you feel drawn closer to God or subtly pulled away? This is not a call to abandon people who don’t yet know Christ, but it is a call to be intentional. Pursue at least one deeper connection this week with someone whose faith challenges and encourages yours, and notice over time how the whole climate of your inner world begins to shift.
