Today’s Open Heaven devotional calls every parent to wake up as a spiritual gatekeeper over their children’s lives. Pastor E.A. Adeboye draws a powerful picture from the palace of King David, showing us that a mother’s timely intercession can crown a destiny. Whether you are a biological parent, a guardian, or someone standing in the gap for a younger generation, this message is for you. Let it stir your prayer life and remind you that what you ask of God on behalf of your children today can shape who they become tomorrow.

Bible reading: 1 Kings 1:15-31 (KJV)

Memory verse: As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. – Psalm 127:4 (KJV)

In 1 Kings 1:1-49, one of King David’s sons decided to crown himself king by staging a coup to overthrow his father. Solomon’s mother was informed of the development, so she went to David and reminded him that he had promised that her son would succeed him as king. That same day, Solomon was crowned king, meaning that Israel had three kings on that fateful day: David, Solomon, and the son who decided to make himself king. Solomon might not even have been aware of the events that led to his coronation; however, because his mother rose and entreated the king on his behalf, he was crowned king.

There are certain things that children might miss if their parents don’t rise to pray for them. A child may not know his or her left from right and may not even be qualified for an exalted position; however, his or her parents’ prayers can elevate that child into that position. The authority that parents have over their children, both naturally and spiritually, is great, and they must learn to use it effectively. Any parent who does not pray for his or her child is like a mother hen who watches as a hawk carries her chick away, leaving the chick to fight for itself. The chick lacks sufficient strength to fight a hawk; however, if its mother joins in the fight, it would have a better chance of being saved.

If you are a parent, do not keep quiet over your children’s destiny so that the devil will not tamper with it. Cry out to God to show your children mercy early in their lives. In Psalm 90:14, Moses prayed that God should satisfy him and the children of Israel early with His mercy so that they would rejoice and be glad all the days of their lives. He knew that the secret to lasting joy and gladness was to start enjoying God’s mercy early in life.

Beloved, if you are a parent, do not neglect your spiritual responsibility over your children. Like Moses, ask God to show your children His mercy early in their lives. Let your prayers position them for opportunities early in life. Your children will begin to enjoy supernatural favour that some people only get to experience as adults if you pray for them now. I pray that God will shower His mercies over you and your household, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, awaken in me a consistent, passionate heart of intercession for every child entrusted to my care, let me never grow silent over their destinies.
  • Father, just as You heard Bathsheba's plea for Solomon, hear my voice today and secure Your best plan for my children against every rival claim.
  • God of mercy, visit my children early, in their youth, in their schooling, in their friendships, and let Your grace mark them before the world ever gets the chance to define them.
  • Heavenly Father, expose and dismantle every plot the enemy has set against my children's purpose, health, and calling, in the mighty name of Jesus.
  • Lord, raise up divine helpers, mentors, and open doors of favour for my children, connections I could never manufacture on my own.
  • Father, grant my children wisdom to choose rightly even when I am not watching, and let the fear of God be the compass they never lay down.
  • God, let supernatural promotion and honour locate my children ahead of schedule, so that the blessings some search for all their lives, mine will carry from their youth.
  • Lord, satisfy my household early with Your mercy, so that joy and gratitude become the defining testimony of every child in my lineage, to Your glory alone.

Declarations

  • I declare that my prayers are arrows of light that go ahead of my children, clearing every obstacle and opening every door ordained for them.
  • I declare that no weapon fashioned against my children's destiny shall prosper, they are hidden under the shadow of the Almighty.
  • I declare that God's mercy reaches my children early, and they will walk in divine favour, purpose, and joy all the days of their lives.
  • I declare that I am a faithful spiritual gatekeeper; I will not be silent, and my intercession makes a difference in the lives of those I love.
  • I declare that my children are a heritage from God, set apart for His glory, and their latter days will be greater than their beginnings.

Reflection

Take a few minutes today to write down the name of each child, or young person, you feel called to cover in prayer. Beside each name, write one specific area of their life you have been passively hoping would work out rather than actively bringing before God. Commit to lifting that single point to the Lord every day this week. Intercession is not a grand gesture; it is a daily choice to show up at the throne of grace on someone else’s behalf. That consistent showing-up is what repositions a destiny.
