Today’s Open Heaven devotional invites us to sit with a truth that many believers quietly wrestle with, walking with God costs something, and that cost is holy, purposeful, and worth every step. Pastor E.A. Adeboye unpacks the second part of what it truly means to carry the weight of a covenant with God, reminding us that the yoke is real but never crushing. If you have ever felt the tension between the life you left behind and the life God is calling you into, this devotional is a timely word for you.

Topic: the Weight of Covenants (2)

Devotional: Open Heaven (RCCG)

Date: 2026-08-15

Bible reading: Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)

Memory verse: Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: – Exodus 19:5 (KJV)

Holiness is living a life that reflects God’s character, and it is the major weight of a covenant with Him. Anyone who is in a covenant with God must be like Him (1 Peter 1:16), and this requires doing all that He asks. In return, the fellow will get many blessings from Him (Deuteronomy 28:1-14).

Some people think that life will become a bed of roses when they become believers; however, Jesus never promised that. In today’s Bible reading. He said that everyone who comes to Him should carry His yoke. This means that being a child of God does not mean that a fellow will not bear any weight of God’s covenant, only that the weight will be light and easy to carry with the help of the Holy Spirit. Philippians 2:13 says: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” God is willing and able to help you fulfil the terms of your covenant with Him if you allow Him.

When you enter into a covenant with God, you will no longer be permitted to do many of the things that unbelievers do. For them, those things may be right, but not for you. Paul said that although all things are lawful, not all things are expedient (1 Corinthians 10:23). Some people may argue that listening to worldly music is not a sin; however, for someone who has made a covenant with God, it is wrong. Some may dress seductively, but God will not approve of you dressing like that. You will get stricter instructions because of your covenant with God, but He will always empower you to obey Him.

The good news is that if you carry the weight of God’s covenant well, you will enjoy its fruits forever. God entered into a covenant with my Father in the Lord, Pa Josiah Akindayomi and gave him certain conditions, and in return, He said that He would start a church through him that would spread around the world. Thank God Pa Akindayomi met those conditions, and when he passed away, God proceeded to fulfil His part of the covenant. Beloved, play your own part; carry the light yoke of God’s covenant of salvation and see Him move into action to fulfil His part of the covenant by showering you with His blessings. I pray that your life will be filled with God’s glorious blessings, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today

These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Lord, give me a heart that genuinely desires to reflect Your character in every area of my life, not out of obligation but out of love for You.
  • Holy Spirit, help me to embrace the weight of my covenant with God rather than shrink back from it, teach me to see it as privilege, not burden.
  • Father, where I have been cutting corners in my walk with You, grant me the grace of repentance and a fresh commitment to honour my covenant.
  • God, empower me by Your Spirit to willingly lay aside the things that are permissible but not beneficial, choosing Your standards above cultural norms.
  • Lord, I pray for every believer who is tempted to live like the world, send a fresh encounter that reminds them whose they are and what they carry.
  • Father, let the fruit of covenant-keeping become visible in my life so that those around me are drawn to You through what they see in me.
  • Holy Spirit, work in me both the desire and the ability to do what pleases God, I surrender my will to Yours today and every day.
  • Lord, just as You faithfully fulfilled Your covenant with those who honoured their part before me, let Your faithfulness be the testimony of my own life.

Declarations

  • I am a covenant child of God, and the Holy Spirit within me enables me to walk in holiness and obedience every single day.
  • I choose to honour the terms of my covenant with God, knowing that He who is faithful will fulfil every promise He has made over my life.
  • The yoke I carry as a believer is light because Jesus walks with me, I will not trade the glory of covenant living for momentary comfort.
  • I am set apart, and I gladly embrace the standards God has placed on my life as markers of His love and His purpose for me.
  • God is at work in me, shaping my will and my actions to align with His pleasure, I yield fully to that work today.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment today to honestly examine one area where you have been living below the standard of your covenant with God, not in guilt, but in honest inventory. It might be something as subtle as the content you consume, the conversations you participate in, or a habit you have told yourself is harmless. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight it, then ask Him for the grace to make one concrete adjustment. Covenant living is rarely overhauled all at once; it deepens one yielded decision at a time.
