Today’s Open Heaven devotional from Pastor E.A. Adeboye confronts us with one of the most searching questions a believer can face: what kind of inheritance am I actually building? Whether you are a young adult just starting out or a grandparent watching your family grow, this message speaks directly to the choices you are making right now that will echo long after you are gone. Settle in, open your heart, and let Scripture shape how you think about the life you are leaving behind.

Memory verse: A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. – Proverbs 13:22 (KJV)
You should always ask yourself this question, especially as you advance in age: “What will people say about me when I am gone?” The truth is that the way you are living your life now will determine what people will say about you when you are gone. This is why you must strive to create a good legacy and guard it jealously. You must never trade it for anything, no matter how enticing it may appear.
Beloved, your legacy will include the name you will leave behind after you exit the earth. While King Hezekiah was a good king, he left a bad legacy for his descendants. In (2 Kings 20:1-11), the king of Babylon sent emissaries to check on him, and he foolishly showed them all the treasures in his house and kingdom. His actions exposed his kingdom and consequently his descendants to the enemy. When Isaiah told him that the consequence of his foolish actions would be the captivity of his children and that all the treasures of his land would be carted away by the king of Babylon, he replied, “Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?” Surprisingly, he was okay with the captivity not happening in his time, but in the days of his children. His actions were clearly unwise. Hezekiah sold his legacy just because he wanted to display his wealth. His descendants would always remember him as the one who exposed them to the enemy and made them lose the kingdom. Today’s memory verse tells us that a good man will leave an inheritance for his children’s children. He will not deprive them of their inheritance or give them a bad name that they will be ashamed of. I pray that you will not open the door for the enemy to torment, afflict, or capture your descendants, in Jesus’ name.
Every family that is battling one ancestral problem or another was exposed to it by someone in their lineage; do not be such a person. If you have done things that you are not proud of, and you know that those things can affect your children and their descendants, run to God for mercy today. Ask Him to cleanse you with His blood and rewrite your family’s story. No matter how old you are, as long as you are alive, there is still hope of leaving a good legacy for your descendants.

Open Heaven Prayer Points for Today
These Open Heaven prayer points for today are original PrayerPrompt content, declarations and a reflection to turn today’s message into prayer.
Prayer Points
- Lord, grant me the grace to live with tomorrow's generation in mind, making decisions today that will bless and not burden my children's children.
- Father, expose every blind spot in me, every area where pride, self-display, or short-sightedness could be quietly eroding the legacy You intend for my family.
- Heavenly Father, where any ancestor in my lineage opened a door to the enemy, I ask that the blood of Jesus seal that breach completely and permanently.
- Lord, give me the courage to run to You now, before my mistakes harden into patterns that my descendants will have to fight to break.
- Father, rewrite every negative narrative in my family's story. Let the chapter that begins with me be one of faith, integrity, and generational blessing.
- Lord Jesus, guard my tongue and my choices in moments of prosperity, so that abundance never becomes the very thing that exposes my household to danger.
- Holy Spirit, keep eternity's perspective alive in my heart so that the peace of my own days never comes at the cost of my children's freedom.
- Father, I ask that my name become a blessing when it is spoken by those who come after me, a testimony to Your faithfulness across every generation.
Declarations
- I am a steward of a legacy that belongs to God, and I will not trade it for momentary gain or fleeting applause.
- The blood of Jesus has broken every ancestral chain that sought to pass through my family line, and I walk in that freedom today.
- I choose integrity in private before I ever stand in public, because the foundation of a lasting legacy is built in the hidden places.
- My children and my children's children will rise up and call God's name blessed because of the seed of faithfulness I am sowing right now.
- I am not defined by the mistakes of those who came before me; I am commissioned by God to be the turning point in my family's story.
Reflection
Before you close this page, pause and name one decision you are currently sitting on that your future grandchildren would have to live with. Hezekiah’s error was not that he received guests, it was that he let vanity make the choice for him. Ask the Holy Spirit to surface anything in your life that looks like hospitality but is really pride, anything that feels like peace but is actually a quiet compromise. Bring it honestly before God, and let Him be both your mercy and your wisdom today.
