Devotional: The Life That Keeps Bearing Fruit
You have probably met someone whose life carries an undeniable weight. Not the weight of performance or religious hustle, but something quieter. Something that makes you lean in. They know God, and that knowing shows up everywhere they go.
Peter writes with that person in mind. In 2 Peter 1:8, he says that if these qualities are in you and are increasing, they will keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in your knowledge of Jesus Christ (NIV). The word “increasing” is doing heavy lifting there. Peter is not describing a one-time deposit. He is describing a life that keeps growing, that never stops becoming more like Christ.
The Christlike qualities Peter lists in the verses just before, faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, love, are not a checklist. They are the shape of a person who walks closely with God. When they increase, the life becomes fruitful. When they stall, the knowledge of God turns dry and academic. Peter is clear: knowledge without these qualities working in you is knowledge that produces nothing.
This week does not have to begin with striving. It can begin with asking. Let this prayer position you to receive what God is already willing to work in you. Come to Him open, and let His Word do what only it can do.
Living an effective and fruitful life grows through focused, Scripture-rooted prayer. These targeted prayer points will help you press deeper into the fruitful life God has called you to (Colossians 1:10).

Daily Prayer for July 20
Daily Spiritual Posture
I come before You today not in my own strength but from my place in Christ, seated with Him in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6, ESV). I quiet my heart, lay down the week’s demands, and open myself fully to what You want to grow in me today.
Main Scripture
2 Peter 1:8 (NIV): “For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise (Psalm 100:4, NIV). You are the vine, I am the branch, and every good fruit in my life grows only because I remain in You (John 15:5, NIV).
I confess every place where I have relied on knowledge about You rather than intimacy with You. I receive Your forgiveness and come close. Let this be a day of real encounter, not religious routine.
Prayer of the Day
Lord, as I begin this week, let these Christlike qualities increase in me so that my life is never ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of You. Your Word says that if faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection, and love are increasing in me, they will keep me from spiritual barrenness. I agree with that Word today. I stand on it.
Grow what is tender in me and strengthen what is weak. Where self-control has faltered, build it. Where perseverance has thinned, renew it. Where love has grown routine, deepen it. Let the knowledge of You never sit still in my life but press outward into every relationship, every decision, every word I speak this week.
You said that the righteous will bear fruit in season, and their leaf will not wither (Psalm 1:3, ESV). I receive that promise. Make my life a living proof of what knowing You actually produces. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift every believer who is discouraged about their spiritual growth right now. Let 2 Peter 1:8 land fresh on their hearts today. Remind them that increase is possible and that You are the one who makes it grow (1 Corinthians 3:7, NIV).
I pray for those whose knowledge of You has become dry and distant. Draw them back into living connection with You. Let their lives become fruitful again by the power of Your Spirit at work within them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Petition
Father, I want to be honest with You. There are areas of my life where I have known Your Word without letting it change me. I have carried information about You without the transformation that should follow.
It is written: “If you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:8, NIV). I pray that into my specific situation today. Where fear whispers that I am too far behind or that real growth is for someone else, I answer it: it is written, and I stand on what is written.
I ask You to do in me what I cannot manufacture in myself. Let Your Spirit be the one producing love, goodness, and perseverance in me, because the fruit of the Spirit is grown in me, not achieved by me (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV). I cooperate. I yield. I stay close to the vine.
I pray from the ground of who I already am in Christ, not from a place of striving to arrive. I am complete in Him (Colossians 2:10, NKJV), and from that place I ask You to let every Christlike quality increase until my life overflows with visible, unmistakable fruit for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

- My faith, love, and perseverance are growing because God Himself is at work in me.
- I am seated with Christ and I pray from a place of victory, not defeat.
- My life is effective and fruitful in the knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ.

Powerful Prayer Points for Deeper Engagement
Move slowly through each prayer point below, allowing the Word to shape your prayer.
- Father, let faith be the foundation of everything I do this week so that every other quality is built on it and not on my own ability. (2 Peter 1:5, NIV)
- Father, grow self-control and perseverance in me so that I do not abandon what You have started when the week grows hard. (2 Peter 1:6, NIV)
- Father, let godliness mark my private life as much as my public one, so there is no gap between who I am with others and who I am before You. (2 Peter 1:7, NIV)
- Father, let love be the crowning quality that ties every other virtue together in my life, making me a genuine reflection of Your character to everyone I encounter this week. (2 Peter 1:7, NIV)
Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Peter does not ask us to manufacture Christlike qualities through willpower. He asks us to add them, which presupposes that God has already supplied the raw material through His divine power (2 Peter 1:3, NIV). Our part is cooperation, not creation. We abide, we yield, and we make room for what the Spirit is already working in us. The qualities increase because we remain close to the One who produces them. As Andrew Murray wrote, “The man who mobilizes the Christian church to pray will make the greatest contribution to world evangelization.” That same mobilizing begins in the individual heart that stays close to the vine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be “ineffective and unfruitful” in the knowledge of God?
It means knowing about God without that knowledge visibly changing you or those around you. Peter is describing a faith that has grown static, one that holds correct information but lacks the transforming power of genuine intimacy. The remedy is not more information but more Christlike character actively growing in your daily life, which is exactly what 2 Peter 1:8 promises when these qualities are increasing.
How do I actually begin growing in these Christlike qualities?
Start where Peter starts: with faith. Every other quality is built on it. Then cooperate with the Holy Spirit through prayer, scripture, and community. You do not produce the growth, but you do create the conditions for it by staying close to Jesus. Remember that the same divine power that called you has already given you everything you need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3, NIV). You are not starting from zero.
Final Encouragement
This week is not a test you have to pass. It is ground where fruit can grow. You have prayed the Word today, and that Word does not return empty (Isaiah 55:11, NIV). Carry it with you through Monday and let it do its quiet, steady work. If you want to close the day the same way you opened it, let these evening prayers bring you back to His presence before you rest.
I declare that these Christlike qualities are increasing in me, and my life is fruitful and effective in the knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
