Devotional – The God Who Finishes What He Starts
There are moments when you look at your life and see more unfinished business than testimony. The dreams that have stalled, the character flaws that keep resurfacing, the prayers that seem to hang in the air without answer. You wonder if God has forgotten what He started in you.
But this is exactly where today’s scripture meets you with breathtaking assurance.
Philippians 1:6 declares, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” This is not wishful thinking or motivational talk. This is divine guarantee from the God who cannot lie.
The God who called you into salvation did not do so halfway. He is not a builder who abandons construction projects when they become difficult.
Every work God begins, He brings to completion. Your transformation is not dependent on your strength to finish it. It rests entirely on His faithfulness to complete what He initiated.
When you gave your life to Christ, heaven did not simply applaud and move on. God rolled up His sleeves and began the intricate, patient, powerful work of reshaping you into the image of His Son.
That work continues today. In the areas where you feel stuck, God is still working. In the seasons where you see no progress, His grace is still growing you. In the moments when you feel like giving up, His Spirit is sustaining the very faith you think is failing.
You are not responsible for perfecting yourself. You are called to yield to the One who is perfecting you, trust His timeline, and thank Him for what He is doing even when you cannot see it.
This is the confidence you carry into prayer today: the God who began a good work in you will bring it to full maturity through His grace.
Daily Prayer for May 12

Daily Spiritual Posture
Today, I come before God with gratitude and confidence, knowing that He who began a good work in me is faithful to complete it. I release the pressure to perfect myself and rest in the grace that is growing me daily. I open my heart to the ongoing transformation that only His Spirit can accomplish.
Main Scripture
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Philippians 1:6 NLT)
Prayer of the Day
Heavenly Father, I thank You for beginning a good work in me the moment I surrendered my life to You. I bless Your name for the faithfulness You have shown in every season, even when I could not see Your hand moving. I declare today that You are still working, still shaping, still growing me into the fullness of Your purpose. I trust that what You have started, You will complete, and I rest in the assurance that Your grace is enough to bring me to maturity.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Entering God’s Presence
Lord, I come into Your presence today not in my own strength, but in the finished work of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that every good thing in me is a result of Your grace and Your Spirit at work. I thank You that You see me not as I am, but as I am becoming in Christ. I enter this time of prayer with thanksgiving, knowing that You are both the Author and the Finisher of my faith.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift up those who feel discouraged by how slow their spiritual growth seems to be. I pray that You would open their eyes to see the work You have already done in them and the work You are continuing to do. I ask that You would strengthen their faith to trust Your process and Your timeline. Let them know today that they are not abandoned projects, but beloved children being perfected by a faithful Father.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Petition
Father, I bring before You every area of my life where I feel unfinished, undone, or stuck. You know the struggles I face, the habits I long to break, the character I desire to develop. I confess that I have tried in my own strength and have grown weary. Today, I surrender these areas afresh to You, trusting that You are faithful to complete what You have begun.
According to 2 Corinthians 3:18, You are transforming me into Your image with ever-increasing glory. I receive that truth today. I ask that Your Spirit would continue the deep work of sanctification in my heart, removing what does not belong and cultivating what reflects Christ. Help me to cooperate with Your grace, to yield when You prompt, and to trust when I cannot see the progress.
I thank You that my transformation does not depend on my perfection, but on Your power. I thank You that You are patient with me, that You do not give up on me, and that You are committed to bringing me to full maturity. Let this truth anchor my soul today and give me peace in the process.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
God’s work in you is not a one-time event. Salvation is immediate, but sanctification is a process. The same God who justified you in a moment is now sanctifying you over a lifetime. He is patient, intentional, and utterly committed to your transformation. You do not have to rush the process or despair when progress feels slow. You simply have to trust the One who holds both the blueprint and the power to build.
Your role is not to manufacture spiritual maturity through willpower. Your role is to remain connected to the Vine, to abide in Christ, and to allow His life to flow through you. As you do, the fruit will come. The change will happen. Not because you forced it, but because He faithful to complete what He begins.
As Charles Spurgeon once said, “He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. If He did not mean to save you, why did He begin? He does not do things by halves.”
Final Encouragement
You are not behind schedule. You are not a disappointment to God. You are not too broken to be used or too flawed to be loved. You are a work in progress under the faithful hand of the Master Builder, and He will not abandon what He has started. Every struggle you face today is part of the refining process. Every moment of surrender is a step toward maturity. Trust Him with the unfinished places. Thank Him for the work already done. Rest in the grace that is growing you even now.
As you close this time of prayer, consider extending your conversation with God tonight through evening prayers that bring reflection and rest to your soul. I declare that God who began a good work in you will complete it, and His grace is carrying you to full maturity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

FAQ
How do I know God will finish what He started in me?
Philippians 1:6 gives you this divine guarantee: God who began the good work in you will continue it until completion on the day Christ returns. This isn't based on your strength or perfection, but on God's faithfulness and His inability to lie. You can rest knowing He doesn't abandon what He initiates.
What should I do when I feel stuck in my spiritual growth?
Release the pressure to perfect yourself and yield to God's work instead. Even when you see no progress, His grace is actively growing you. Trust His timeline, thank Him for what He's doing unseen, and remember that transformation is His responsibility, not yours alone.
Why does my spiritual transformation feel so slow?
God's work in you is intricate and patient—it's about reshaping you into Christ's image, not quick fixes. The slowness you perceive often means deeper work is happening. Your role is to trust His process and timeline rather than measure progress by what you can see in the moment.
How can I pray when I feel like giving up on my faith?
Come before God with honest gratitude, acknowledging His faithfulness even when you can't see it. Thank Him that His Spirit is sustaining the very faith you think is failing. Ask Him to strengthen your trust in His completion of the good work He began in you, not your own effort.
