Devotional: The Proof Is in the Fruit

There is a moment most believers quietly dread, when they look at their lives and wonder whether anything has actually grown. The prayers feel routine. The faith feels familiar. And a slow, honest question surfaces: does my life actually look like someone who belongs to Jesus.

Jesus addressed that exact feeling in John 15. He did not say fruit is optional or decorative. He said fruit is the evidence. It is how the Father is glorified, and it is how discipleship is proven real. Not by what you carry in your heart alone, but by what grows visibly from your life.

The invitation here is not to perform. Andrew Murray spent a lifetime teaching that fruitfulness is not the result of striving but of abiding. You stay connected to the Vine, and the life of the Vine moves through you. The fruit is His doing. But the staying is yours.

Today is a day to pray with open hands. Ask the Father to clear away whatever has interrupted that connection, and trust that a branch that stays in the Vine will always, in His time, bear much fruit.

Daily Prayer for June 26

Daily Spiritual Posture

Come before God today as a branch that needs the Vine. Release every independent striving and every fear of barrenness. You are not here to earn fruitfulness. You are here to abide.

Main Scripture

John 15:8 (NLT): “When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.”

Entering God’s Presence

Father, You are the Lord of the harvest and the Keeper of every vine. Your glory fills the earth and Your purposes never fail. I come to You not as one who has it all together, but as one who is learning what it means to truly abide.

I quiet every distraction and every voice that competes with Yours. I choose Your presence above my own plans. You are worthy of a life that bears fruit for Your name.

Prayer of the Day

Father, let my life bear much fruit, showing myself to be Your disciple. I pray that every area of my life, my words, my relationships, my choices, my service, would reflect the life of Christ flowing through me. Let the fruit of the Spirit grow visibly in me: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23, NLT).

Prune what is unproductive. I surrender the branches of habit, attitude, and distraction that drain life rather than produce it. Your pruning is not punishment. It is the work of a gardener who believes in the vine.

Let me not be satisfied with the appearance of godliness while lacking its power (2 Timothy 3:5, NLT). I ask for genuine, lasting fruit. Fruit that glorifies You. Fruit that remains (John 15:16, NKJV). Fruit that causes others to look at my life and see You clearly.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Interceding for Others

Father, I lift every believer who feels spiritually dry or unfruitful today. Reconnect them to the Vine. Let them know that barrenness is not their identity.

I pray for those in my life who are watching Christians from a distance. Let the fruit of my life, and the lives of those I love, become a compelling witness that draws them toward You.

Personal Petition

Father, You know the gap between who I am and who I long to be for You. I am not coming with a performance to impress You. I am coming as a branch that needs the Vine more than it needs anything else.

Teach me to abide. Teach me to remain in Your Word, in Your presence, and in Your love (John 15:9, NLT) so that fruitfulness is not something I manufacture but something You produce through me. Where I have drifted, draw me back.

Let my daily life, the ordinary moments, the conversations, the work, the quiet acts of faithfulness, be the very place where Your glory is seen. I want people to encounter You through my life, not just my words.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Powerful Prayer Points for Deeper Engagement

Move slowly through each prayer point below, allowing the Word to shape your prayer.

  1. Father, teach me to abide deeply in Christ so that His life flows freely through mine and produces fruit that lasts, in Jesus’ name. (John 15:5, NLT)
  2. Father, remove every unfruitful habit, attitude, and distraction that keeps me from growing as Your disciple, in Jesus’ name. (John 15:2, NLT)
  3. Father, let the fruit of the Spirit be evident in every relationship and every responsibility You have placed in my life, in Jesus’ name. (Galatians 5:22-23, NLT)
  4. Father, use the fruit of my life as a witness that leads others to recognize Your glory and Your love, in Jesus’ name. (Matthew 5:16, NLT)

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding

Fruitfulness in the Christian life is never the result of trying harder. It is the overflow of a life genuinely stayed on Christ. The branch does not labor to grow grapes. It stays in the vine, and the vine does what only the vine can do. Every season of apparent barrenness is an invitation to go deeper in abiding, not wider in activity. As Andrew Murray wrote, “The more you abide in the Vine, the more abundantly will the fruit appear.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to bear much fruit as a disciple of Jesus

Bearing much fruit means living in a way that visibly reflects the character and purposes of Christ. This includes the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, NLT), acts of love and service, and a life that draws others toward God. It is not about religious busyness but about spiritual vitality that grows from a genuine connection to Christ.

What should I do if my life feels spiritually unfruitful right now

Start by returning to abiding. John 15:5 (NLT) makes it clear: “apart from me you can do nothing.” Fruitlessness is almost always a sign of a weakened connection, not a broken identity. Return to the Word, return to prayer, and ask the Holy Spirit to restore that living connection. The Vine has not given up on the branch.

Final Encouragement

The Father is not waiting for a perfect version of you to start producing fruit. He is working in you right now, through every season, every pruning, every quiet act of faithfulness. Your life is already in His hands, and He is a skilled Gardener. If you want to close this day in continued prayer, the evening prayers on PrayerPrompt are a beautiful place to finish well.

I declare that my life bears much fruit, glorifying the Father and showing myself to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
