Devotional: The Branch That Was Cut Free to Bear More
There is a particular ache that comes when you have tried, in your own strength, to produce something good, and it has come to nothing. You have worked, striven, disciplined yourself, and still the life you hoped to live feels dry at the roots. That ache is not failure. It is preparation.
Romans 7:4 arrives like a key turning in a lock. Paul says you have died to the law through the body of Christ, and the purpose of that death was not simply freedom from condemnation. It was union. You were joined to Another, to Him who was raised from the dead, so that you should bear fruit to God. The entire logic of grace points here: you were not just pardoned, you were replanted.
Andrew Murray spent decades writing about abiding, and the heart of it was always this: fruit is never manufactured, it is produced by connection. A branch does not strain to grow grapes. It stays attached to the vine, and the vine does the rest. Your joining to Christ is that attachment, and His resurrection life is the sap moving through you right now.
Today, come to prayer not as someone trying harder but as a branch leaning further in. The fruit God is after in your life will grow from this posture, not from your performance.
Daily Prayer for June 21
Daily Spiritual Posture
Still yourself before God. Unclench your hands. Release the outcomes you have been gripping. You are not coming to negotiate or perform. You are coming to abide.
Main Scripture
“Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another, even to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.” (Romans 7:4, NKJV)
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I come to You through the body and blood of Your Son. I do not come through my record or my effort. I come through Christ alone, and in Him I am welcome.
You are the God who raises the dead and who joins the barren to the living. I worship You because You have made a way not just into Your presence but into genuine, lasting fruitfulness through union with Your Son.
Prayer of the Day
Lord Jesus, Romans 7:4 declares that I have died to the old way and have been joined to You. I receive that union today as a present reality, not a future hope. You are the Risen One, and I am grafted into Your life.
Christ, by being joined to You, may my life yield fruit to God. Let the fruit of the Spirit rise in me, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, as described in Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV). Not as a product of my effort but as the natural overflow of Your life moving through mine.
Where I have lived as though I were still under the law, striving and straining to earn what You have already given, forgive me and renew my mind. Let me walk today in the freedom of John 15:5 (NKJV), knowing that apart from You I can do nothing, and in You I can bear much fruit. I abide. You produce. That is the covenant of grace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift every person today who is exhausted from trying to manufacture spiritual fruit through willpower alone. Let them discover the rest of union with Christ.
I pray for those in my family, my church, and my community who feel spiritually dry. Graft them deeper into the Vine. Let Your resurrection life flow through their ordinary days and bring forth fruit that remains, as Jesus promised in John 15:16 (NKJV).
Personal Petition
Father, You know exactly where my life has felt unfruitful lately. You know the areas where I have pulled away from the Vine and tried to produce on my own. I am honest before You today.
I ask You to deepen my union with Christ in those exact places. Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT) says that just as I received Christ Jesus as Lord, I must continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him. Root me deeper today, especially where the soil of my soul feels hard.
Let my work, my relationships, and my words bear visible fruit that points people to You. Let others see something in my life that cannot be explained by my talent or effort, only by the life of the Risen Christ working through me, according to Galatians 2:20 (NKJV).
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Romans 7:4 is not primarily a verse about moral improvement. It is a verse about marriage. Paul uses the word “joined” in the relational, covenantal sense. You have been united to Christ the way a spouse is united to a partner. Intimacy produces life. The fruit God desires does not come from trying harder to be good. It comes from staying close to the One who is good, and letting His nature express itself through yours. As Andrew Murray wrote, “The only humility that is really ours is not that which we try to show before God in prayer, but that which we carry with us in our daily conduct.”
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be “joined to Christ” as Romans 7:4 describes
Paul uses the imagery of marriage to describe the believer’s union with the Risen Christ. Just as a spouse shares in their partner’s life, you share in Christ’s resurrection life the moment you trust in Him. This union is not symbolic. It is the spiritual reality by which His nature, His power, and His fruitfulness become active in you, as Colossians 3:3 (NIV) affirms: your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
How do I practically bear fruit for God in my everyday life
Fruit grows through connection, not effort. Practically, this means prioritizing the disciplines that keep you close to Christ: consistent time in Scripture, honest prayer, worship, and Spirit-led obedience. John 15:5 (NKJV) makes the condition simple: abide in Christ and you will bear much fruit. The fruit appears in your character, your relationships, your generosity, and your witness, as the natural result of staying near Him.
Final Encouragement
You came to prayer today as a branch. You leave as one that is more firmly attached to the Vine. The fruit is already forming in ways you cannot yet see. Trust the union. Trust the Risen Life that is working in you even now. If you want to close this day the same way you opened it, let the evening prayers at PrayerPrompt carry you back into that place of rest and connection before you sleep.
I declare that because I am joined to Christ, my life yields genuine, lasting fruit to the glory of God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
