Devotional – The Daily Choice

Following Jesus sounded easier before you counted the cost. Now you’re facing what it actually requires—and it’s uncomfortable.

Here’s the tension: You want to follow Jesus, but you also want comfort, convenience, and control. You believe in Him, but obedience feels harder than you expected.

Jesus didn’t hide what following Him demands: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 (NIV)

Notice three non-negotiables. Deny yourself—your agenda, your comfort, your way. Take up your cross daily—not once, but every single day. Follow Me—not your feelings, not the crowd, Me.

This isn’t a one-time decision you made years ago. This is a daily choice you make every morning when you wake up.

Following Jesus costs something—but the alternative costs everything. When you deny yourself to follow Him, you gain life. When you cling to yourself, you lose it.

Take this prayer at your pace today. Even one sincere moment with God is enough to begin.

Today’s prayer commits to willing obedience. Let’s pray.

Daily Spiritual Posture

I choose to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow Jesus today with a willing heart.
I release my demand for comfort and embrace the call to obedience.
I trust that what I surrender to follow Jesus is nothing compared to what I gain in Him.

Daily Prayer for January 9 2026

Nine days into the new year, settle the question of obedience. Today’s prayer focuses on following Jesus with a willing heart—denying self, taking up your cross daily, and walking in complete surrender to His lordship.

Main Scripture

Luke 9:23 (NIV)
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Prayer of the Day

Father, I choose to follow Jesus today with a willing heart and complete obedience.
I deny myself—my agenda, my comfort, and my control—and I take up my cross.
Help me to follow Jesus not just in belief, but in action, surrender, and lifestyle.
Give me courage to obey immediately, even when obedience is costly.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Entering God’s Presence

Lord, I come before You acknowledging that following Jesus requires more than I often give.
I confess the times I’ve wanted the benefits of discipleship without the cost of obedience.
I surrender every area where I’ve been following my own will instead of Yours.
Holy Spirit, give me a willing heart to deny myself and follow Jesus completely today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Interceding for Others

Father, I lift up believers who are struggling to obey what You’ve already told them to do—give them courage and grace.
Bless those who are counting the cost of following Jesus—strengthen their resolve to choose Him above all else.
Strengthen new disciples who are learning what it means to take up their cross daily—establish them in radical obedience.
Let Your church rediscover the call to deny self and follow Jesus without compromise.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Personal Petition

Heavenly Father, I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus.

I declare that I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and I choose to deny myself, take up my cross daily, and follow Him wherever He leads.
According to Matthew 16:25, whoever loses their life for Jesus will find it, and I embrace that paradox today—surrender brings life, not loss.

Lord, expose every area where I’ve been following Jesus selectively—obeying when it’s convenient, but resisting when it costs me something.
Break the pattern of partial obedience that says yes to Jesus on Sundays but lives for self the rest of the week.
I acknowledge that true discipleship isn’t occasional—it’s daily, intentional, and complete.

Teach me what it means to deny myself—not just deny sinful things, but deny my right to my own way, my own comfort, and my own agenda.
Help me to recognize when I’m fighting for control instead of surrendering to Your lordship.
According to Galatians 2:20, I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me—let that reality govern every decision I make.

Give me courage to take up my cross daily—to embrace the difficulties, the sacrifices, and the discomforts that come with following Jesus.
I reject the lie that following Jesus should always feel easy or that obedience shouldn’t cost me anything.
Let me count the cost and still choose Jesus, knowing that He is worth more than anything I surrender.

I declare that 2026 will be marked by radical obedience and wholehearted devotion to following Jesus.
When He says go, I will go. When He says wait, I will wait. When He says give, I will give. When He says speak, I will speak.
Let immediate obedience become my trademark and willing surrender become my lifestyle.

Thank You that following Jesus leads to life—abundant, purposeful, eternal life.
I commit to follow Him today and every day with a willing heart.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Powerful Prayer Points for Deeper Engagement

Take your time with each prayer point below. Pray and meditate on the scriptures as the Spirit leads.

  1. Father, give me courage to deny myself daily—my comfort, my agenda, and my control—and help me to choose Jesus’ will over my own in every situation, in Jesus’ name. (Luke 9:23 ESV)
  2. Lord, teach me to take up my cross daily without complaint or resistance, embracing the cost of following Jesus as the pathway to true life and purpose, in Jesus’ name. (Mark 8:34-35 NKJV)
  3. Father, break every pattern of partial obedience in my life and replace it with immediate, complete surrender to whatever Jesus tells me to do, in Jesus’ name. (John 14:15 NLT)
  4. Lord, let my willing obedience to follow Jesus be so radical and consistent that it draws others to consider the worth of surrendering everything to Him, in Jesus’ name. (Philippians 2:5-8 NASB)

Declarations and Affirmations

  • I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, and I deny myself, take up my cross daily, and follow Him.
  • My obedience to Jesus is immediate, complete, and willing—not grudging or selective.
  • I count the cost of following Jesus and still choose Him above all else.
  • What I surrender to follow Jesus is nothing compared to what I gain in Him.
  • I follow Jesus not just in belief, but in action, lifestyle, and radical obedience.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding

Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy—He promised it would be worth it. Denying yourself isn’t about self-hatred; it’s about dethroning self so Christ can be Lord.

Taking up your cross daily means embracing the sacrifices that come with following Jesus—the inconveniences, the rejections, the misunderstandings, the discomforts. But here’s the truth: the cross you carry following Jesus is lighter than the burden you carry living for yourself.

Discipleship costs something, but sin costs everything. Choose wisely.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote: “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”

Die to self. Die to control. Die to your own way. And in that death, discover the abundant life Jesus promised.

Final Encouragement

You’re nine days into 2026. Every day ahead will present opportunities to follow Jesus or follow yourself.

The cost is real. But so is the reward.

Watch today for moments when Jesus is calling you to obey—to deny yourself in a conversation, to take up your cross in a difficult situation, to follow Him when it’s inconvenient—and respond with a willing heart.

Speak this over yourself right now: “I declare that I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I deny myself, I take up my cross daily, and I follow Him. My obedience is immediate and complete. What I surrender is nothing compared to what I gain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

FAQ

What does it mean to deny yourself and follow Jesus daily?

Denying yourself means releasing your demand for comfort, control, and your own agenda—not just avoiding sin, but surrendering your right to your own way. It's a daily choice, not a one-time decision made years ago. Jesus calls this the foundation of discipleship: taking up your cross each morning and following Him instead of your feelings or the crowd.

Why is following Jesus harder than I expected?

Following Jesus requires you to count the cost—He never promised comfort or convenience, only the call to obedience. The tension happens because you want both Jesus and control, both belief and comfort. Real discipleship demands surrender in daily choices, which is uncomfortable when you're used to living for yourself.

How do I develop a willing heart for obedience?

A willing heart comes from understanding that surrendering to Jesus brings life, not loss. Expose the areas where you obey selectively—saying yes to Jesus on Sundays but living for yourself the rest of the week. Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen your resolve daily and give you courage to obey immediately, even when it costs something.

What's the difference between believing in Jesus and actually following Him?

Belief alone doesn't require obedience, but following Jesus demands action, surrender, and a changed lifestyle. You can believe intellectually while resisting what belief actually requires. Real discipleship means your daily choices align with Jesus' lordship, not just your Sunday confession of faith.
