Devotional – The Order That Matters
You’re already doing a lot for God. Serving. Giving. Working. Trying to live right.
But somewhere in the middle of all the doing, you’ve lost the closeness.
Here’s the tension: You’re active in ministry or Christian service, but you feel distant from Jesus. You’re busy for God, but you’re not really with God.
Look at what Jesus did when He chose the twelve: “Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach.” Mark 3:13-14 (NIV)
Notice the order. First: be with Him. Then: be sent out.
Not the other way around.
Your activity for God was never meant to replace your intimacy with God. The disciples weren’t appointed to do ministry—they were appointed to be with Jesus, and ministry flowed from that.
When being with Jesus becomes secondary to doing for Jesus, you end up running on empty.
Take this prayer at your pace today. Even one sincere moment with God is enough to begin.
Today’s prayer resets your priorities. Let’s pray.
Daily Spiritual Posture
I choose intimacy with Jesus over activity for Jesus as my first priority.
I release the pressure to perform and embrace the invitation to be present with God.
I trust that being with Jesus will produce more lasting fruit than all my striving.
Daily Prayer for January 2 2026
On this second day of the year, establish the order that will sustain you for all 363 days ahead. Today’s prayer focuses on prioritizing time with Jesus above work for Jesus. Let intimacy become the foundation from which all your service flows.
Main Scripture
Mark 3:13-14 (NIV)
“Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach.”
Prayer of the Day
Father, I commit to prioritize being with Jesus above doing for Him this year.
I acknowledge that my relationship with You is more important than my work for You.
Teach me to sit in Your presence before I move into service.
Let intimacy with Jesus become the source from which all my fruitfulness flows.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Entering God’s Presence
Lord, I come before You acknowledging that I’ve been busy doing things for You while neglecting time with You.
I confess the moments I’ve replaced fellowship with activity and intimacy with productivity, and I ask for forgiveness.
I surrender my need to stay busy and receive Your invitation to simply be with You.
Holy Spirit, reset my priorities and teach me what it means to be with Jesus before being sent out.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift up pastors and ministry leaders who are exhausted from doing—draw them back to being with You first.
Bless believers who are running on empty trying to serve You—remind them that You desire relationship over religious activity.
Strengthen new Christians who are learning to walk with You—establish them in intimacy before sending them into service.
Let Your church rediscover the priority of being with Jesus as the foundation for all ministry.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Petition
Heavenly Father, I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus.
I declare that 2026 will be marked by my commitment to be with Jesus before I do anything for Him.
According to Luke 10:42, Mary chose what is better by sitting at Jesus’ feet, and I choose that same priority today—intimacy over activity, presence over productivity.
Lord, expose the lie that my worth is determined by my work and my value is measured by my output.
Break the cycle of religious busyness that keeps me doing more while feeling less connected to You.
I receive the truth of John 15:5—apart from Jesus, I can do nothing of eternal value, no matter how busy I am.
Teach me to guard my time with You as sacred and non-negotiable.
Help me to say no to good opportunities when they threaten to replace my best priority—being with Jesus.
Let my prayer time, worship, and meditation on Your Word become the anchor that holds me steady in every season.
I reject the pressure to prove myself through constant activity and performance.
I break agreement with the spirit of busyness that creates movement without meaning and exhaustion without intimacy.
Give me supernatural discipline to prioritize stillness, silence, and sitting in Your presence daily.
I declare that everything I do in 2026 will flow from who I am in Christ, not from who I’m trying to become through achievement.
Let my identity be rooted in being loved by Jesus, not in being useful to Jesus.
As I learn to be with You first, send me out with authority, anointing, and authenticity that only comes from time spent in Your presence.
Thank You that You don’t need my service—You desire my fellowship.
I step into this year committed to the order Jesus established: be with Him first, then be sent out.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Powerful Prayer Points for Deeper Engagement
Take your time with each prayer point below. Pray and meditate on the scriptures as the Spirit leads.

- Lord, help me recognize when I’m substituting religious activity for genuine relationship with You, and give me courage to stop and return to Your presence, in Jesus’ name. (Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV)
- Father, protect my time with Jesus from distractions, demands, and the constant pressure to be productive, and teach me to treasure stillness in Your presence, in Jesus’ name. (Psalm 46:10 NLT)
- Lord, let my service and ministry in 2026 overflow naturally from my intimacy with Jesus rather than from obligation, ambition, or the expectations of others, in Jesus’ name. (2 Corinthians 5:14 NASB)
Declarations and Affirmations
- I am called first to be with Jesus, and my doing flows from my being.
- My worth is not determined by my work but by my identity as God’s beloved child.
- I choose intimacy over activity and presence over productivity in my relationship with Jesus.
- I am anointed to serve because I prioritize time spent in God’s presence.
- My greatest calling is to be with Jesus, and everything else flows from that foundation.
Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
The disciples’ most powerful ministry moments didn’t come from strategy sessions or leadership training. They came from being with Jesus—watching Him pray, hearing Him teach, witnessing His compassion, and experiencing His power.
Time with Jesus transforms you in ways that time for Jesus never can. When you prioritize intimacy, your service stops being obligation and becomes overflow.
This is the secret to sustained fruitfulness in 2026: stop trying to do more for God and start choosing to be more with God.
A.W. Tozer wrote: “God is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible—what a pity that we plan only the things that we can do by ourselves.”
The impossible becomes possible when you stop running on your own strength and start drawing from time spent with Jesus.
Final Encouragement
You’re only two days into the new year. This is the perfect moment to reset your priorities before momentum carries you in the wrong direction.
Don’t let 2026 become another year of activity without intimacy. Don’t sacrifice being with Jesus on the altar of doing for Jesus.
Watch today for the pull to jump into productivity before spending time in God’s presence—those moments are invitations to choose differently, to pause and prioritize being with Jesus first.
Speak this over yourself right now: “I declare that my relationship with Jesus is my highest priority. I will not sacrifice intimacy for activity or replace presence with productivity. I am called first to be with Him, and everything I do flows from that foundation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
End today where you began—in God’s presence. Seal this commitment with Evening Prayers tonight.
