Devotional – When Pride Blocks the Blessing

There are moments when pride becomes your prison. You know you should apologize, but your stubborn heart insists you’re right. You watch others get recognition while your contributions go unnoticed, and resentment takes root.

Maybe you’re wrestling with offense that won’t let go—replaying the hurt, justifying the bitterness, refusing to be the first to reach out. Perhaps it’s entitlement whispering that you deserve better treatment, better circumstances, better opportunities than what you have.

Sometimes you’re serving faithfully, but joy is gone because no one appreciates it. You give, sacrifice, show up—and feel invisible.

Philippians 2:5-7 (NIV) brings the answer: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing.”

Think about what Jesus gave up to be born in that stable. He was God—fully divine, worshiped by angels, lacking nothing. Yet He laid aside His privileges. He chose the manger over the throne. He made Himself nothing.

This wasn’t forced on Him. This was voluntary humility. He entered humanity through a teenage girl’s womb, was born in a stable, and lived as a servant. Not because He had to, but because that’s the mind of Christ—humility, obedience, and love that puts others first.

Here’s the revelation: the mind of Christ transforms how you think about everything. It’s not weakness to serve. It’s not foolishness to humble yourself. It’s not defeat to choose love over being right.

Maybe you’re facing family tension where pride won’t let you apologize first. Perhaps it’s workplace conflict where you’d rather stay offended than extend grace. Or maybe it’s comparison poisoning your peace—everyone else’s Christmas looks perfect, and yours feels lacking.

Heavenly Father, help me carry the mind of Christ today.

Teach me to serve as Jesus served.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I surrender my desire for recognition and embrace Your call to serve.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Personal Petition

Heavenly Father, I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus.
I stand on the truth that I can have the mind of Christ. (Philippians 2:5)

I bring my specific situation before You today.
Every area where pride has taken root—I ask You to uproot it.
My relationships, my work, my ministry, my family—let humility reign.
I refuse to let offense, entitlement, or comparison control my thinking.

Lord, give me Christ’s mind in the conflict I’m facing.
Help me apologize first even when I don’t feel I’m fully wrong.
Help me serve without demanding recognition or appreciation.
Help me love when it costs me something.

I declare that I will not be ruled by pride.
The same mind that led Jesus to the manger and the cross is available to me.
I choose humility over self-promotion.
I choose obedience over comfort, and love over being right.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding

Philippians 2:5-7 reveals the heart of the incarnation—it was voluntary humility. Jesus didn’t lose His deity; He chose to lay aside the privileges of deity. This is the mind you’re called to have.

The mind of Christ doesn’t come naturally. Your natural mind wants recognition, rights, and respect. But when you allow the Spirit to renew your mind, you begin to think like Jesus—serving instead of demanding service, giving instead of grasping, loving instead of protecting yourself.

This is countercultural and counter-intuitive. The world says promote yourself; Jesus says humble yourself. The world says demand your rights; Jesus says lay them down. The world says protect your position; Jesus says serve from the lowest place.

Andrew Murray wrote: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.” The mind of Christ shifts your focus from yourself to others, from your glory to God’s glory.

Final Encouragement

You don’t have to fight for your position. You don’t have to demand recognition. You don’t have to win every argument or prove you’re right.

Jesus—who had every right to everything—chose to have the rights of nothing. And in that choice, He changed everything. When you carry His mind, you gain power you never had through pride. Humility opens doors. Obedience releases blessing. Love transforms hearts.

This Christmas Eve, let Christ’s mind replace your mind. Let His humility displace your pride. Let His love overpower your offense.

Say it boldly:
“Lord, help me carry the mind of Christ today—humble, obedient, and full of love, in the name of Jesus!”

As you continue through this sacred evening, return to God in prayer tonight and let His mind continue shaping yours.

Watch for opportunities to serve instead of being served. Watch for moments to choose peace over being right. Watch for love rising where pride used to reign. Christ’s mind is being formed in you.
