Devotional, You Are Not Praying From Empty
There is a particular kind of tiredness that comes not from hard work but from the quiet, persistent feeling that you are somehow not enough. You finish the day tallying what you did not do, who you may have disappointed, where you fell short. The list feels long. The sense of lack feels louder at night than at any other hour.
But Colossians 2:10 does not ask how your day went. It simply states: “You are complete in him, who is the head of all rule and authority” (NLT). Complete. The Greek word is plēroō, meaning filled to the full, lacking absolutely nothing in your standing before God. Not complete when you perform well. Not complete when you feel it. Complete now, in Christ.
That changes everything about how you come to God tonight. You are not arriving at His throne to close a deficit. You are arriving as someone already whole in the One who holds all authority. The prayer you offer this evening rises from that fullness, not from the bottom of an empty cup.
So lay the day down. Let the accounting stop. You are invited to close this night not striving, but resting in the finished reality of who you already are in Jesus.
Night Prayer for August 27
Evening Spiritual Posture
I come to You, Father, not carrying the weight of a day’s performance. I enter Your presence through Christ alone, seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6, ESV), complete in Him before I speak a single word.
Main Scripture
Colossians 2:10 (NLT): “You are complete in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I thank You that I do not have to earn my way into this moment. You have made me acceptable in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6, NKJV), and I rest in that tonight.
I confess where my words and thoughts have not honored You today. I receive Your forgiveness, which is faithful and just (1 John 1:9, NIV), and I bring a cleared heart into this evening prayer.
Prayer for the Night
Father, Your Word declares that I am complete in Christ, lacking nothing in my standing before You. I release every prayer of this evening from that place of completeness, not from lack or insecurity, in Jesus’ name.
I cast every care of this day onto You, because You care for me (1 Peter 5:7, NIV). I will not carry tonight what You have invited me to give. I receive the peace that surpasses understanding to guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7, NIV).
I thank You that You grant sleep to those You love (Psalm 127:2, NIV). My rest tonight is not earned. It is a gift from a Father who keeps watch, and I receive it with open hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift every person tonight who is ending this day feeling not enough. Let the truth of Colossians 2:10 reach them where the lie of lack has settled in.
Strengthen those facing fear, grief, or exhaustion. Let them know that You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18, NIV) and that their standing before You is not in question.
Personal Petition
Father, You know exactly what I carried today. You saw every moment I doubted my worth, every hour I tried to earn what You have already given. I bring all of it to You now.
It is written that I am complete in Christ, the head of all rule and authority (Colossians 2:10, NLT). Where insecurity has whispered that I am lacking, I answer with Your Word: I am filled to the full in Him. I do not pray tonight as someone begging for standing. I pray as someone who already has it.
Where the enemy has accused me today, I declare that there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1, NIV). That accusation has no authority here. I enforce that finished word over my mind and heart tonight.
Settle me fully into this truth as I sleep. Let it be more real to me tomorrow morning than it was this evening. I trust You with everything I could not fix today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

- Father, silence every accusing voice with the truth that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, in Jesus’ name. (Romans 8:1, NIV)

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Colossians 2:10 is not a comfort to work toward. It is a foundation to stand on. Paul wrote it to people being pressured by religious systems that demanded more, taught more, and required more to feel spiritually complete. His answer was direct: you already have everything in Christ. Praying from completeness is not arrogance. It is faithfulness to what the text actually says. As Andrew Murray wrote, “The measure of God’s love for us is that He gave His Son; the measure of Christ’s love is that He gave Himself.” You are the recipient of that full gift. Nothing more is owed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to pray from completeness rather than from lack?
It means your prayer is not a bid to earn God’s attention or to close a spiritual deficit. Colossians 2:10 declares that you are already filled to the full in Christ. Praying from that place means you approach God as someone He has already made whole, not someone still waiting to qualify. It shifts the tone of prayer from anxious pleading to confident, trusting conversation with a Father who is already for you.
What if I do not feel complete tonight?
Feelings are real, but they are not the final word. Romans 8:1 reminds us that our standing in Christ is not determined by how we feel on a given night. Completeness in Christ is a fact declared by Scripture, not a sensation that must be confirmed by your emotions. You can honestly tell God that you feel empty while still choosing to stand on what He says is true. That honest, faith-filled posture is exactly what prayer is for.
Final Encouragement
You close this day not diminished, not behind, and not on trial. You close it in Christ, who is the head of all rule and authority, and in whom you are filled to the full. If this evening’s prayer stirred something in you, spend a few minutes with our evening prayers collection and let the Word continue to settle your heart.
I declare that I am complete in Christ, fully known and fully held by the One who holds all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
