Devotional: The Vine Does the Growing
There is a particular kind of tired that settles in near the end of the day, the kind that makes you wonder whether anything you did today actually amounted to anything. You tried. You kept going. And still the gap between who you are and who you want to be feels wide.
Jesus knew that feeling would come, which is why He did not say, “Try harder and produce more.” He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5, NKJV). The fruit He is after is not productivity. It is character, the patient, loving, unhurried likeness of Christ forming quietly inside you.
Andrew Murray spent a lifetime meditating on this passage and arrived at one simple conclusion: abiding is not striving, it is staying. A branch does not grunt and strain to produce grapes. It stays connected, and the vine does the work. What looks like growth to the watching eye is simply the life of the vine moving through a branch that has stopped resisting.
Bring that to God tonight. Not performance, not a report card, just a yielded branch settling back into the vine before sleep. He will take it from here.
Night Prayer for July 14
Evening Spiritual Posture
Before praying, release the weight of today’s efforts. Confess any self-reliance that crept in. Receive His forgiveness freely given in 1 John 1:9. Then come to Him simply as a branch comes to a vine: open, dependent, at rest.
Main Scripture
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, NKJV)
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I come to You at the close of this day with thanksgiving. You are the God in whom I live and move and have my being (Acts 17:28, NIV). You are not distant. You are the very source of every good thing growing in me.
I worship You as the true vine, the one life that sustains every branch. Tonight I choose to stop striving and simply stay, rooted in You, hidden in Christ, held by Your Word.
Prayer for the Night
Jesus, I yield to You as the vine tonight. Apart from You I cannot grow, but as I abide in Your promises, let the fruit of Christlike character increase in me, in Jesus’ name. Let love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control form in me as Your Spirit works from the inside out (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV).
While I sleep, let Your Word dwell in me richly (Colossians 3:16, NIV). Let my rest be an act of trust, not just an act of tiredness. I am not earning fruit tonight. I am receiving it from You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Lord, I lift every person reading this tonight. Some feel fruitless and forgotten. Let them hear You say that a branch does not produce on its own but only by staying connected (John 15:5, NKJV). Remind them that they are already in You.
For those striving to be better through willpower alone, let grace meet them here. Root them deeper in Your love, which is the soil from which every lasting change grows (Ephesians 3:17, NIV). In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Petition
Father, You know what I have been carrying today, the impatience I wish I had not shown, the fear that I am not growing fast enough, the quiet worry that I am falling behind. I bring all of it to You now.
It is written: “He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit” (John 15:5, NKJV). I agree with that Word tonight. I do not have to manufacture fruit. I have to abide. So I declare that I am abiding in You now, not by the quality of my feelings but by the anchor of Your promise.
When fear whispers that nothing is changing in me, I answer: it is written that He who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6, NIV). You are not finished. The vine is still flowing.
I receive Your peace tonight, not as something I achieved but as something You give. I rest in You, my vine, my life, my source. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Abiding is not a spiritual achievement you reach after years of discipline. It is a posture you return to every single day, and every single night. Jesus does not tell the branch to produce fruit. He tells it to stay. Character growth, the patient, enduring kind, happens in the hidden place of connection with Christ, not in the performance of religious activity. Rest tonight in that truth: the vine is doing what the branch cannot do on its own. Andrew Murray wrote, “The only secret of abiding in Christ is just to yield yourself to Him who is always abiding in you.”
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to abide in Christ before sleep?
Abiding before sleep means finishing the day in deliberate connection with Jesus rather than just drifting off. It means handing Him your thoughts, receiving His Word, and trusting that the growth He has begun continues even in the quiet hours. Psalm 127:2 (NIV) reminds us that God grants sleep to those He loves, and sleep itself becomes an act of trust when we have placed ourselves consciously in His care.
What if I feel like I am not producing any spiritual fruit right now?
That feeling is common, but it is not a verdict. Fruit often grows quietly, underground and unseen, before it becomes visible. Jesus promises that the branch that abides will bear much fruit (John 15:5, NKJV), and that promise is based on His faithfulness, not on your feelings. Return to the vine tonight and let Him assess the growth. Your role is to stay connected; His role is to cause the increase.
Final Encouragement
You do not have to finish today having produced enough. You simply have to finish it in Him. Let tonight be a returning, a quiet setting down of striving, and a choosing to stay close to the one who said, “I am the vine.” If this prayer has steadied you, you will find more prayers like it waiting for you in our evening prayers collection.
I declare that I am rooted in Christ, the true vine, and His life is producing fruit in me even now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
