Devotional: The Vine Does the Work
There is a quiet frustration that many believers carry into the night: the sense that they are not bearing enough fruit. You look at your patience this week and it fell short. Your kindness felt forced. Your peace was brittle when it should have been deep. And somewhere in that honest assessment, a familiar weight settles in.
But Galatians 5:22-23 does not call this list a checklist. It calls it a fruit. And fruit is not manufactured; it is grown. It comes from remaining connected to the source, not from trying harder in your own strength.
Andrew Murray wrote that abiding in Christ is not a strained effort but a restful surrender. Tonight is not the night to resolve to do better. Tonight is the night to go deeper into the Vine. Every quality listed in that passage, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, is a description of Christ Himself. When you remain in Him, His life flows into yours naturally, the way sap moves through a branch without the branch straining for it.
Bring your week honestly before God tonight. Then receive this: He is not disappointed in the branch. He is tending it. You are exactly where growth happens.
Night Prayer for June 15
Evening Spiritual Posture
Before you pray, still yourself. Release the performance of today. You are not approaching God as someone who must prove fruit; you are coming as a branch returning to its Vine.
Main Scripture
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23, ESV)
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I come to You at the close of this day, not with a report of accomplishments but with an open heart. You are the God who tends, who prunes, and who causes growth that I could never produce on my own.
I enter Your presence as the branch enters the Vine, needing You for everything. I am still. I am here. I am Yours.
Prayer for the Night
Father, let the fruit of Your Spirit flourish in my life as I remain in Christ. Tonight, as I sleep, let Your Spirit do in me what I cannot do for myself. Where love has grown thin, replenish it. Where peace has been scattered, restore it. Where patience cracked today, rebuild it from the inside out.
I surrender the striving of this day. I trust the pruning of Your hand. I rest in the truth that You are the Vinedresser and I am held in Your care. Let this night be one of deep abiding, where my roots go further down into Christ and my life grows more fully into His likeness.
Thank You that Your Spirit is already at work within me, producing what only He can. I receive that work tonight with gratitude and trust. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Interceding for Others
Lord, I lift every person tonight who feels like they are failing to bear fruit. Let them hear the truth that connection to Christ is the answer, not more effort. Restore their peace in You.
I pray for those around me who need to see the fruit of the Spirit lived out clearly. Let my life, rooted in Yours, become a quiet testimony to them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Personal Petition
Father, You know where my fruit has been sparse this season. You see the relationships where patience ran out, the moments where kindness cost me something and I held back, the days when my peace depended more on circumstances than on You.
I come back to John 15:5 tonight, where Jesus says that apart from Him I can do nothing. I believe that. I stop trying to generate what only You can grow. I remain in Christ, and I ask You to let that remaining be deep and real, not just a posture but a true communion.
Grow love in me that does not depend on being loved first. Grow joy that persists under pressure. Grow gentleness that becomes my first response, not my last resort. Let Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) be a description of my life, not a standard I fall short of.
I trust the Spirit who lives in me, as Romans 8:11 (NLT) promises, to continue this work. Tonight I rest in that confidence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
The fruit of the Spirit is not a curriculum to complete but a life to receive. Every quality listed in Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) is already present in Christ, and the Spirit’s work is to form Christ in you. Your role is not production but proximity. Stay close to Jesus tonight, and trust the Vinedresser to bring the harvest in His time. As Andrew Murray wrote, “Abide in Christ, and you will bring forth much fruit.”
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to remain in Christ so the fruit of the Spirit can grow
Remaining in Christ means staying in conscious communion with Him through prayer, His Word, and surrender to the Holy Spirit. It is not a feeling but a posture of dependence. Jesus describes it in John 15:4 (ESV) as the branch staying joined to the Vine; the connection is what makes fruitfulness possible, not personal effort alone.
What should I do when I feel like I am not bearing good fruit in my daily life
Begin with honesty before God rather than self-condemnation. Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) names the fruit but Galatians 5:16 (NIV) gives the path: walk by the Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you have been relying on self rather than staying connected to Christ, and then return to that place of abiding. Growth always follows reconnection.
Final Encouragement
