Devotional: The Road Behind You Is Not the Road Ahead
There is something in us that keeps looking back. Not always out of longing, sometimes out of habit. We replay the chapter that has already closed, rehearse what we could have done differently, and quietly wonder whether what lies ahead can really be better than what we left behind.
You may be pressing into a calling right now that feels unsteady underfoot. The old season is fading but the new one has not fully come into view. That in-between place is exactly where God spoke these words through Isaiah: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing.” (Isaiah 43:18-19, NLT). He was not dismissing Israel’s history. He was redirecting their eyes. The miracle ahead required their full attention.
The call on your life is not behind you. God is not finished composing what He started in you. What He is doing right now may look small, like a path through a wilderness, but Isaiah says it is a road He Himself is making. The spring breaking through dry ground tonight is not accidental. It is His answer to your willingness to move forward.
Bring that willingness to Him now. Release the weight of what was, and receive what He is already unfolding in front of you.
Night Prayer for August 17
Evening Spiritual Posture
Before you pray, still yourself. Release any striving. You are not building your calling tonight; you are receiving it. Come to God as someone already held, already known, already seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6, NKJV). Breathe. The One who makes roads in the wilderness is already at work.
Main Scripture
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:18-19, NLT)
Entering God’s Presence
Father, I come to You with a grateful heart. You are faithful across every season, and Your mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23, NLT). I enter Your presence tonight not with a list of failures but with worship, because You are worthy.
I confess where I have looked back with anxiety or clung to what You have already completed. I receive Your forgiveness now, and I lay down every weight at Your feet (Hebrews 12:1, NIV).
Prayer for the Night
Lord, guard my mind as I sleep tonight. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, keep my heart and my thoughts in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7, NIV). Still every voice that replays old regret or stirs tomorrow’s fear.
Let this night be restorative. You give sleep to those You love (Psalm 127:2, NIV), and I receive that gift now, trusting You to continue Your work in me even while I rest.
Interceding for Others
Father, I lift everyone tonight who is standing at a threshold, unsure whether to step forward into what You have called them to. Let Isaiah 43:19 settle into their hearts as a personal promise. Let them perceive the new thing You are doing.
For those who are grieving a season that has ended, bring the comfort only You can give. Let them find, as the psalmist did, that weeping may last through the night but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5, NLT).
Personal Petition
Father, You know exactly where I am in the call You have placed on my life. You know what I have been carrying from the seasons behind me, and You know what still feels uncertain ahead. I come to You tonight not to strive but to surrender.
Your Word says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:18-19, NLT). So I choose tonight to release what is behind. I release the disappointments, the delays, and the definitions of myself that belong to a chapter You have already closed. I agree with Your Word: the former things do not define what You are doing now.
Because it is written that You are making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, I declare that the dry places in my calling are not permanent. You are already at work. I am not begging You to start something; I am agreeing with what You have already begun. I stand in the authority of Christ, seated with Him above every discouragement and delay (Ephesians 2:6, NKJV), and I receive the new thing You are doing in me.
Strengthen me to press forward. Let me run with endurance, fixing my eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith (Hebrews 12:1-2, NKJV). Make the path clear one step at a time, and let my trust in You grow deeper than my need to see the full picture tonight.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding
Isaiah 43:18-19 was spoken to a people in exile, not a people thriving. God told them to stop measuring the future by the pain of the present. The new thing He promised was not conditioned on their circumstances being resolved first; it was already springing up. The same is true for you. The new thing does not begin when your situation improves. It begins when you choose to perceive it. As Andrew Murray wrote, “God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does releasing the past mean I have to pretend it did not happen?
Releasing the past is not denial; it is a decision about where you direct your attention. God acknowledged Israel’s real history before telling them not to dwell on it (Isaiah 43:18, NLT). You can honor what you have walked through while choosing not to live there. Release is an act of trust, handing the story to God and allowing Him to write what comes next.
What if I cannot yet see the new thing God is doing?
God asks, “Do you not perceive it?” which means perception is something we can cultivate, not just stumble upon. Begin by agreeing with the promise before you can see the evidence. Faith, Paul reminds us, is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV). Pray the verse, declare the promise, and ask God to open your eyes to what He is already building.
