Devotional – The Double Blessing of Growth

There is a peculiar frustration that settles over the believer who loves Jesus deeply yet feels stuck in the same patterns year after year. You attend services, you read your Bible, you even pray regularly, but something inside whispers that there should be more.

Peter understood this tension when he wrote his final letter to the scattered church.

He had walked with Jesus through triumph and failure, witnessed the resurrection, led thousands to salvation, and yet in his closing words he pointed to something beyond all religious activity. 2 Peter 3:18 declares, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”

Notice the invitation carries two dimensions, not one. Grace and knowledge, together, form the axis on which spiritual flourishing turns.

Grace without knowledge produces sentimental faith that collapses under trial. Knowledge without grace produces cold religion that judges everyone and loves no one.

But when these two grow together in your life, something magnificent happens. You begin to recognize God’s hand in places you once saw only chaos, you speak truth without losing tenderness, and you carry authority that comes not from position but from intimacy.

The verb Peter chose is present imperative, a command to continuous action. This is not a one-time decision or a seasonal emphasis, it is the posture of your entire Christian journey.

Today, Jesus invites you into this double blessing. Not striving, not performing, not trying to impress heaven with your discipline, but simply opening your heart to receive more of who He is and allowing His unmerited favor to transform how you think, speak, and live.

This is the kind of growth that touches every aspect of life: your marriage, your workplace, your thought patterns, your reactions under pressure, and even the way you rest.

The Double Blessing of Growth
A quiet moment to pause and reflect — from prayerprompt.org

Daily Spiritual Posture

Today I position myself as a student and a recipient. I come not with demands but with open hands, ready to receive what Jesus desires to teach me. I acknowledge that growth in grace and knowledge is not something I manufacture but something He supplies as I draw near to Him in humility and expectation.

Main Scripture

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18 NKJV)

Prayer of the Day

Jesus, help me grow in the grace and knowledge of You, flourishing in every aspect of my life. I refuse to settle for stagnant religion or surface-level Christianity. I ask that Your grace would saturate every corner of my heart, and that revelation of who You truly are would reshape the way I see everything. Let this growth be evident not just in my words but in my character, my choices, and my capacity to love others well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Entering God’s Presence

Father, I come before You with gratitude for the gift of another day to know You more deeply. I honor You as the source of all wisdom and the fountain of unending grace. I acknowledge that apart from You I can do nothing, and with You all things become possible. I quiet my heart now and invite Your Holy Spirit to lead this time of prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Interceding for Others

Lord, I lift up every believer who feels spiritually stuck or discouraged by slow progress. I pray that You would breathe fresh revelation into their hearts and remind them that growth in You is always possible. I ask that You would surround them with teaching, relationships, and experiences that draw them closer to You. Let them taste the goodness of Your grace in a way that renews their hunger for more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Personal Petition

Jesus, I stand today on the promise of 2 Peter 3:18 and ask that You would fulfill it in my life. I do not want to remain where I am spiritually, I want to flourish in every dimension of my walk with You. Grow my understanding of Your Word so that I am not tossed by every wind of doctrine or swayed by popular opinions that contradict truth. Increase my capacity to receive and extend grace, especially in moments when my flesh wants to judge, criticize, or withdraw.

Philippians 1:9 says that love should abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. I ask for that kind of love, one that is wise, discerning, and rooted in truth. Let my growth be holistic, touching my mind, my emotions, my relationships, and my daily decisions. I do not want knowledge that puffs up or grace that excuses sin, I want the balanced maturity that reflects Your nature.

Colossians 1:10 calls me to live a life worthy of You, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God. I claim that promise today. Let my life produce fruit that lasts, fruit that glorifies You and blesses others. I surrender every area where I have been resistant to change, every stronghold that has hindered my progress, and every lie that has kept me from believing I can truly flourish in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Powerful Prayer Points for Deeper Engagement

Move slowly through each prayer point below, allowing the Word to shape your prayer.

  1. Father, give me a hunger for Your Word that goes beyond duty or routine, let it become the daily bread that sustains and strengthens my spirit, in Jesus’ name. (Job 23:12 NKJV)
  2. Father, remove every barrier in my heart that resists growth, whether pride, fear, or unbelief, and replace it with childlike openness to Your instruction, in Jesus’ name. (Psalm 25:9 ESV)
  3. Father, surround me with voices and relationships that sharpen my understanding of You and challenge me to go deeper in my walk, in Jesus’ name. (Proverbs 27:17 NIV)
  4. Father, let the grace You have shown me overflow into every relationship and responsibility I carry, making me a conduit of Your kindness and truth, in Jesus’ name. (2 Corinthians 9:8 NKJV)

Wisdom for Deeper Understanding

Growth in grace and knowledge is not the work of human effort but the fruit of abiding in Christ. When you remain connected to Him, drawing life from His presence and feeding on His Word, transformation becomes inevitable. The question is never whether God is willing to help you grow, but whether you are willing to position yourself in the places where growth happens: in His Word, in prayer, in community, and in obedience to what He reveals.

This kind of growth touches everything. It changes how you respond when someone wrongs you, how you steward your finances, how you speak to your children, and how you handle seasons of waiting. The grace of God teaches you to say no to ungodliness and yes to what honors Him, while the knowledge of God anchors you in truth so you are not swayed by feelings or circumstances.

Andrew Murray once wrote, “The life of faith is not a life of mounting up with wings, but a life of walking and not fainting. It is a life of patient, persevering progress in the path of duty and growth in grace.” This is the daily, quiet, faithful walk that Peter calls us to, one step at a time, one revelation at a time, until we are transformed into the image of the One we follow.

Final Encouragement

You are not meant to remain where you are. Jesus has called you into a journey of continuous growth, where every season brings new depth, new understanding, and new expressions of His grace working through your life. Do not despise small beginnings or slow progress, every step forward matters to Him. As you close this time of prayer, carry the confidence that God is already at work in you, drawing you closer, opening your eyes to see Him more clearly, and empowering you to live with greater freedom and fruitfulness.

If you find yourself needing to revisit God’s presence later today, consider setting aside time for evening prayers to close your day in His peace and reflection. I declare that you are flourishing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and every area of your life is being touched by His transforming power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

FAQ

What does it mean to grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus?

Growing in grace means receiving and experiencing God's unmerited favor more deeply, while growing in knowledge means understanding who Jesus truly is through study and revelation. Together, these create spiritual flourishing that transforms how you think, speak, and relate to others. Grace without knowledge becomes sentimental; knowledge without grace becomes cold judgment. Both working together produce a mature faith that touches every area of life.

Why do Christians feel spiritually stuck even when they pray and read the Bible?

Spiritual stagnation often happens when faith becomes routine activity rather than a living relationship of continuous growth. Religious practices alone—without intentionally seeking deeper understanding of Jesus and opening your heart to His grace—can create the feeling that something vital is missing. Peter's command to "grow" reminds us that Christianity is a dynamic journey, not a destination reached and then maintained.

How can I grow spiritually when I feel like I'm not making progress?

Position yourself as a humble student and recipient rather than someone who must perform or manufacture growth. Open your hands to receive what Jesus wants to teach you through His Word, His Spirit, and relationships with other believers. Growth happens through consistent openness to God's grace and willingness to let His truth reshape your thinking and character over time, not through striving or discipline alone.

What is the difference between grace and knowledge in Christian faith?

Grace is God's unmerited favor and kindness toward you, transforming your heart with tenderness and compassion. Knowledge is understanding who Jesus is through Scripture and revelation, giving you wisdom and truth. Grace without knowledge produces shallow emotion that fails under pressure; knowledge without grace produces harsh judgment. Both together create believers who speak truth with love and carry genuine spiritual authority.
